Abstract

The purpose of this contrastive linguistic study is to provide a functional explanation of English translations of auxiliary verbs in the 'ko' construction. There are five types of auxiliary verbs [- ko itta (be)/ -ko sipta (want)/ -ko nata (after)/ -ko malta (end up)/ -ko pota (try)] which have grammatical, semantic and pragmatic features, respectively. This study aims to find how the English translations are made. These auxiliary verbs were extracted from two Korean novel texts and then the English counterparts were analyzed based on them.
The result of the analysis reveals that the auxiliary verbs are translated into various constructions depending upon semantic features.
First, the auxiliary verb 'itta', which has progressive, iterative, habitual and duration semantic features and imperfective aspect, is translated variously depending on the preceding verb, V1, from [V1+ko+V2]. If 'itta' has a V1 with active verbs, it is translated into [be+ing] (75.9%), or [present participle] (19.3%). If it involves stative verbs, it is translated into [be+adjective] (3.6%), or nothing. Second, the translation of 'sipta' appeared in verbs (82.4%) [ want/ would like toV / wish/ feel like ~ing] and nouns(17.6%) [ desire/ urge]. Each translated word has their own meaning. Third, the English translation of 'nata', which has complete, perfective aspect, is mostly translated into conjunctions. The two events listed by 'nata' are ordered chronologically. The time distance of the two events is ordered like this: [after> and (then)> once> as]. Fourth, the counterparts of 'malta' isn't translated in this study. The last type 'pota' is translated into 'let's'.
