ABSTRACT
This study aims to investigate the attributes in the shopping tourism destination of Busan by using IPA, Importance-Performance Analysis. For this purpose, a close-ended questionnaire was prepared, based on a review of prior literature. After a refinement of the items in a pretest, the survey was conducted with the tourists visiting major shopping areas in Busan from October 7 through October 13, 2009. A total of 250 questionnaires were distributed and out of the 220 retrieved, 180 valid responses were used for the analysis through the statistical program packages of SPSS12.0.
The research findings may be summarized as follows:
First, in the demographical characteristics of the sample, approximately 62.6% of the respondents were males. About 77.4% of the respondents had at least one university degree. In the sample's shopping behaviors, 42.8% of the respondents used their acquaintances as information sources. About 56.1% of the respondents were accompanied by their lovers of friends in shopping tourism. About 50% of the respondents spent about 200 or 300 thousand Won in shopping and 63.3% preferred clothing or shoes in shopping.
Second , the results from the factor analysis proved uni-dimensionality for the measured items. The findings of Cronbach's Alpha were acceptable, all higher than 0.7, and thus the internal consistency of the measured items was validated.
Third, in the analysis of the importance of the measured items, trust in commodities, availability of wanted commodities, convenience in transportation to shopping areas, fair price of commodities, maintenance of public order, and so on were found in the order of importance. In the analysis of the performance of the measured items, accessibility to Busan, convenience in transportation to shopping areas, festivals other than shopping tourism, an assortment of commodities, trust in commodities, and so on were found in the order of performance. In the analysis of the difference between importance and performance of the measured items, maintenance of public order, fair price of commodities, various spaces for refreshing, reliability of the commodities, fair price of commodities, and so on were found in the order of the difference.
Finally, in the importance-performance analysis, accessibility to Busan, convenience in transportation to shopping areas, festivals other than shopping tourism, and so on were found in the order of importance while various spaces for refreshing, various spaces for refreshing, convenience in transportation to shopping areas, and so on were found in the order of performance. And in the difference between importance and performance, various spaces for refreshing, regular bargain sale, convenience in transportation to shopping, and so on were found in the order of the difference.
Managerial implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed at the end of the study.
