- Abstract
- This is a study on the visual image of broadcasting professional baseball games. The kinds of meanings made by the visual images of broadcasting professional baseball games are analyzed through Semiotics of Visual Culture. The three Korea 2009 professional baseball series; the 5th, 6th and the 7th games are studied as the three aerial broadcasting companies KBS, MBC and SBS the three baseball games each in turn.
The three games of the same KIA and SK teams were held in the same Jamsil playground and were broadcasted by three different broadcasting companies producing variety of visual images that show the characteristics of each broadcasting company. Each broadcasting companies showed different sports images and the purpose of this study is to analyze the different images produced by each broadcasting companies.
Four research subjects; 1. The relationship between the visual aesthetics and the image product of broadcasting professional baseball games. 2. The difference of broadcasting images expressed by the three aerial broadcasting companies. 3. The kinds of meanings the professional baseball broadcasting produce through the composition of the pictures. 4. The kinds of meanings produced by the arrangement of the images made by the professional baseball broadcasting; are studied.
Especially, the visual image of sports broadcasting is quite different from the genre of the movies and dramas. It is because the visual image of sports is produced by the limited motion of the camera and the selection of momentary images. Therefore, instead of the concepts of 'shooting' and 'editing' used in the analysis of the movies or dramas, 'composition of the picture' and the 'arrangement of the images' are used in this study.
By applying Semiotics, 10 analysis codes are selected and the characteristics of each broadcasting companies are studied accordingly and the effects and meanings are suggested. Each broadcasting companies had some differences in the visual images along each analysis codes, which resulted in various meanings and effects on their own. That is, the difference in visual images make difference in meanings.
The study is lack in the detailed analysis of broadcasting the whole professional baseball games and has limits in the explanations of the differences of visual images owing to the researcher's subjective views. More study on the professional baseball games and sports images are required and I hope this study could be a small help in producing a more refined image production of the professional baseball programs.
