Abstract
The purpose of this study is to construct elements (the goals, objectives, concepts, and contents) of social sciences education for kindergarteners. For this purpose, the concept of the social science education for young children and national curriculum of education in kindergartens are analyzed. In addition, 240 teachers are surveyed to analyze the situation of the social science education for children, and to verify the appropriateness of the elements of social science education suggested. According to the results of the verification of the appropriateness of the survey, the final elements of social science education are suggested.
The results of the analysis of the situation of the social sciences education for children are as follows:
Firstly, in the field of the social education, ecology, economics, respondent teachers recognize the concepts of that field relatively well, however, they teach children law and politics without full recognition. Secondly, educational contents related to the social sciences written in national curriculum are practically taught, but the teachers can't realize the relevance of the contents to the academic knowledge. Thirdly, from the analysis of frequency of participating in the training programs related to the social sciences education for children as pre- and present kindergarten teachers, the teachers are short of the experiences to take part in the programs. Lastly, the reasons for difficulty in teaching the social sciences education for children result from the insufficiency of teaching material, no clearly provided educational curriculum of the social sciences education for children, and insufficient understanding of the concept of the education.
Additionally, the verification of the appropriateness of the elements suggested in this study results in the final elements of social sciences education like follows;
Firstly, the goals of social sciences education consist of the areas of function, attitude and knowledge. Secondly, the objectives of social sciences education for children are presented in relevance to the each study such as psychology, sociology, historical sciences, geography, law, economics, anthropology, ecology. Thirdly, the concept of social sciences education for preschool children is composed of the basic contents related to each academical category of social sciences. Finally, the educational contents of social sciences education for children are classified and presented in accordance with topics of life in order for teachers to apply them easily.
