Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find a better way of using Korean subtitles and English captions when watching audio-visual materials, especially folktales. Listening is very important for communication. English is initially taught and learned through listening. The provision of appropriate audio-visual materials can result in positive effects on drawing children's interest, and helping them to produce a better result.
The following questions were tested:
1. In learning vocabulary, is there a difference in vocabulary retention levels between Korean subtitles and English captions when watching a folktale repeatedly with the two modes of visual aids?
2. In comprehension, is there a difference in comprehension levels between Korean subtitles and English captions when watching a folktale repeatedly with two modes of visual aids?
For this study, 64 6th-grade students from the same elementary school were divided into two groups. Each group watched the same folktale with Korean subtitles and English captions three times. After the folktale viewing session, two types of tests (vocabulary questions and comprehension questions) were presented to check their listening comprehension. This process was repeated six times. So they watched a total of six different folktales, three times each.
The result of this study were as follows:
1. In the vocabulary test, watching a folktale repeatedly does not significantly differenciate the effect under the two caption modes. But this is maybe caused by short watching times. If watching a folktale repeatedly for more than 3 times, and doing some other activities, the results will change.
2. In the comprehension test, watching a folktale with Korean subtitles repeatedly is significantly effective for students.
The findings of this study lead to the following recommendations.
First, an interesting folktale encourages students to endure the repetitive listening drills and even enjoy them. Second, teachers can use different types of caption modes in different situations. During listening comprehension class, Korean subtitles mode is more effective than English caption mode. When using English captions, watching the folktale more times and doing more related activities may be more effective.
