The Study of Tone in Yoon-Suk, Hong’s Poems

This research explores Yoon-Suk Hong’s poems in terms of tones. The Studies of Yoon-Suk, Hong’s poems have been sufficient so far. Specifically few studies on the partial aspect of euphony alone in her poems have been conducted. So, this study on her poem's euphony is very effective to shed light on the nature of her poetry. In particular, this research focuses on dynamics, confession of inner consciousness, and criticism of reality through the euphony of her poems. This research aims to examine the intrinsic structure and unique forms of her poems by making an analysis of euphony in her poems and to clarify the clues of dynamics, confession of inner consciousness, and criticism of reality. This research adopts the followings as references: (1) Roman Jakobson’s theory of system of information transmission, (2) C. C. Colwell’s viewpoints of euphony, type, rhythm, image, vocabulary and grammar suggested by Joon-O Kim, and (3) R. W. Boynin’s “An Introduction to Poems.” It selects as texts major poems of Yoon-Suk, Hong’s anthology of poems and examines the poetic apparatus of language creating based on forming factors of language euphony, grammar and vocabulary. The outcomes of this research go as follows. In the first, a dynamic euphony occurs when the future-oriented intention toward the Utopia is based on the language of the past-oriented conviction depending on the absolute being. For example, the depiction of confronting and conflicting images, repeated directly-opposed structures of predicative and reduplication, and epigrams project the dynamic euphony strongly. In addition, an active interaction of stratums laid one by one in the hierarchical structure makes the whole structure dynamic. Secondly, expressions of poems which stress the intention opposite to pessimism are depicted by Yoon-Suk, Hong’s strong theistic conviction. In particular, Hong’s intention expresses dynamic euphony externally, but her internalized intention conveys euphony of confession. The central idea of Hong’s poems is always Christianity. Her religious consciousness converges into a return to the Utopia. According to her poetic logics, this world stands for ‘a place away from home’ and the next refers to hometown. The Utopia is defined as an aesthetic space to return. This is embodied through euphony of confession. Thirdly, Yoon-Suk, Hong expressed her deep interest in Korea’s tragic history and crippled political situations. This is closely related to her specific personal experiences in a student movement and her sudden change of mind by the Pacific War, the Korean War and the Gwangju Democratization Movement. Her attitudes of life satisfying aesthetic sense of poems are expressed as a reflexive structure of language when they conflict absurd circumstances of the times. These attitudes criticize reality metaphorically using satires and humors. In conclusion, the above things tell us that euphony of Yoon-Suk, Hong’s poetry expresses not womanly weak aspects but manly dynamic ones. The inner consciousness of aesthetic space where to return is embodied through confessional tones. The poet’s critical voice to circumstances of the absurd times depicts the world of her poetry.
