An Analysis of Post-Reading Activities in Middle School English 1 Textbooks And Activity Books
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze post-reading activities in randomly chosen middle school English 1 textbooks and activity books. In this study, two criteria have been used in the analysis of post-reading activities. First, post-reading activities in textbooks were checked according to directions for revised 7th English national curriculum. Second, post-reading activities in textbooks and activity books were analyzed according to question types.
Results were as follows:
First, post-reading activities usually focused on language, and finding details was emphasized in textbooks and activity books.
Second, comprehension questions in teaching material should provide more top-down processes like skimming and understanding general purpose, in order to use both linguistic knowledge and schematic knowledge.
In conclusion, post-reading activities in textbooks and activity books should be more varied and balanced so that students make use of what they have read in a meaningful way. When teaching reading strategies, teachers should give an explanation and feedback.
