- Abstract
- This study analyzes Elementary school English textbooks that are being used under Educational Curriculum, revised in 2007, and compares with the results of previous analysis(Han, 2006) which analyzes elementary school textbooks that were used under the 7th Educational Curriculum. The purpose of this comparison is to see if the revised textbook will be improved for learners. In terms of the following;ⅰ) The number of the basic words used, ⅱ) The number of new words for each lesson, ⅲ) The frequency and distribution rate of each word and intervals in which words appear, ⅳ)Connection between 3rd and 4th grade.
The results of the analysis are follows. First, the textbooks of the educational curriculum revised in 2007 used more basic words. 91.4% of the vocabulary in the 3rd grade textbook was basic word usage, 91.9% in the 4th grade. Compared with textbooks of the 7th Educational Curriculum, it was increased about 20% in the 4th grade. Second, the distribution of new words per lesson was irregular and uneven in all two textbooks. Third, the frequency of words was higher in revised textbooks. Words appearing more than six times in textbooks, accounted for 77.6% in the 3rd grade, 45.6% on the 4th grade. Compared with textbooks of the 7th Educational Curriculum, it was increased about 2% in the 3rd and 4th grade. Distribution rated of words was more effective in revised textbooks. Distribution rated of words over 4 in textbooks, accounted for 34.5% in the 3rd grade, 11% in 4th grade. Compared with textbooks of the 7th Educational Curriculum, it was increased about 20% in the 3rd and 10% in the 4th grade. The intervals of repetition for each word were more effective in revised textbooks. The intervals of repetition for each word under 3 were more effective in revised textbooks. Compared with textbooks of the 7th Educational Curriculum, it was increased about 15% in the 3rd and 20% in 4th grade. Forth, revised textbooks connected between 3rd and 4th grade was more closely.
Therefore the textbook of the Educational Curriculum Revised in 2007 is the more effective choice for learning English.
