고등학교 영어 교과서에 사용된 관사의 특징과 학생들의 관사 사용오류에 관한 연구

- Abstract
- The national curriculum of English focuses more on communicative competence than on grammar. For this reason, in spite of their high frequency and importance, articles are rarely instructed in the class. In fact the minute misusage of articles can hamper effective communication. Korean students have difficulties in using articles, which the Korean language do not have. For better English communication, English teachers have to teach articles to students. Thus, I analyze some of the previous theories on the functions of English articles and then how the varied functions of them are reflected in a textbook for 1st-grade high-school students. With this survey, I tested how correctly 100 highschool students used the articles.
The result is that some of the basic functions were frequently used on the textbook such as the indefinite articles that indicate 'one' or what is newly introduced, and the definite articles that refer to the above-mentioned noun, or to the only existence. The same result appeared in the questionnaire test. These consequences show that some of the students have little knowledge of articles and the others only know the basic functions of them. Though there were many clues to find a proper article in the context of the sentences, only 30% of the students could catch the right answer.
I suggest that the varied functions of the articles should be considered in textbooks and teachers should help students familiarize themselves with the complex workings and meanings of the English articles.
