- Abstract
- This study focused on the investigation of the Busan middle school students' interests in marine orgarnisms so that a field study program is devised in order to raise the students' interest in studying marine orgarnisms. The ocean, which plays an important role in the ecosystem of the earth and has a potential to become an unlimited supplier of natural resource, has become an area that many countries have been trying to develop actively. As this reason, it seems important to remind students of the importance of marine orgarnisms and to raise their interest in this subject for South Korea is surrounded by the ocean and particularly, the marine city, Busan will give advantages to the students who live in the city. In addition, in the 7th revised national curriculum, as the section 'living orgarnisms and diversity in the environment' has introduced a new content that deals with classification of living orgarnisms, students will be able to have an opportunity with which they can study the various aspects of living orgarnisms. Therefore, it seems really necessary to raise their interest in marine orgarnisms in relation to the revised curriculum.
Having considering the fact that although it is best to observe and classify marine orgarnisms directly, this method has financial difficulties and is time consuming as well, a field study program that is associated with Busan marine natural history museum, which has various specimen of marine orgarnisms seems the best option. There are many natural history museums in South Korea. However, since Busan marin natural history museum specialized in collecting marine orgarnisms, through the analysis of the specimen of marine orgarnisms that are displayed in the museum and the current field study programs, I will develop a field study program for the first year middle school students so that the program is used in school immediately.
For this, there was a survey on the students questioning the degree of interest in biology, opinions on field study and the marine orgarnisms that are introduced in the text books. Ten marine orgarnisms that are easily discovered in the sea side in Busan were selected and the students were asked if they had seen them and their knowledge of the orgarnisms was checked. The result of the survey says that the degree of interest in biology is higher than physics, chemistry and earth science. Although many students answered that they were interested in studying biology, not many students knew the ten marine orgarnisms with little knowledge on them. It appears that the degree of interest in biology is high but the interest in marine orgarnisms and is relatively low. And, about the field study experience, there are many field studies related to biology and observing specimen has been turned out to be helpful in studying the subject. Furthermore, since the students are very positive about having field study program when studying the section 'classification of orgarnisms', and the field trip program that is associated with Busan natural history museum, that allows students to see various marine orgarnisms easily, raises the students' interest in studying marine orgarnisms and brings positive effect on their academic activity, a field study program that is linked to Busan natural history museum has been devised and is ready to be used in school for the first year meddle school students who have been taught according to the 7th revised educational curriculum.
