- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to investigate the usability of English novel in teaching English for middle school students in Korea and to present effective teaching methods in English class.
Literature has many advantages in English classroom, because it is a very effective source to teach the foreign culture and language necessary for communication. So it is desirable that literary works should be used as effective tools to teach the English language.
Chapter Ⅱ deals with many advantages of a novel, major considerations to choose a novel, and theories of English teaching methods.
Chapter Ⅲ deals with methods to teach English with English novel, Holes. Among literary texts, novel is one of the most effective materials to teach English to middle school students. A novel is very authentic because it shows us real life setting and enables us to meet various characters in an indirect way.
As an example of using literature as practical teaching methods, Holes is selected because it has a very interesting story with authentic and accessible vocabulary for middle school students. A master plan and sub plans have been suggested for teaching this novel.
In conclusion, it is obvious that literature can not only develop linguistic skills, but improve general knowledge about culture and communicative competence. However, it is still hard to apply an English novel as a teaching material for the language learning classroom. Therefore, teachers are required to make more efforts to motivate students to read appropriate literary works and to develop effective teaching methods using them.
