The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of children's poetry written on English on improving elementary school students’ ability in reading and writing English.
To achieve this purpose, experimental lessons with various activities based on English poems for children were given. Forty-nine 6th grade elementary school students were divided into two groups: control and experimental. Two groups were asked to take pre-test and each groups equality was verified. Research was conducted during their English lessons for 8weeks. The results are as follows.
First, according to the results of the post-test, by independent samples t-test, the experimental group didn't show meaningful improvement in their English reading and writing ability.
Second, after analyzing paired sample t-test using the standard score of the test because the questionary composition of pre-and post-test was different; The experimental group showed meaningful improvement in their reading ability but control group also showed it. It means reading activities using English poems didn't affect on the improvement reading ability.
Third, after analyzing paired sample t-test using standard score of the writing tests, the experimental group show some meaningful difference and the control group didn't show any meaningful difference. The difference doesn't mean control group improved sentence writing ability. The small range of the experimental group in writing tests means writing activities using English poems have a positive effect on the improvement of writing sentences. In conclusion, the various writing activities using English poems will have a positive effect on writing ability of elementary school students.
The following suggestions are made based on the result of this research. First, we realized the importance of reading and writing activities to promote students' concentration, degree of accomplishment and participation. For this reason, we have to choose and apply suitable activities considering students' interest, level and characteristic and so on.
Second, There was no meaningful difference in the independent sample t-test, but there was some improvement in the paired sample t-test. Therefore further study of reading and writing activities and objective assessment is necessary.
Third, this research measured on the ability to understand the meaning of words and texts, to write after activities using English poems, It is meaningful to study the relationship between reading activities and listening ability because it is important to exchange printed words into sound words for efficient reading.
