A Study of Teaching Listening and Speaking Skills Using the movie Love Actually
Abstract
This study aims to look into the educational significance of movies and recommend to use movies as teaching materials in class. With the purpose to enhance the students' interest and participation, their preferences as well as their language abilities were considered in selecting the movie used in the classroom. At the same time, the research and experiment were implemented to make language learning process more effective through various class activities.
To select an appropriate movie, the survey was carried out among 52 ninth-grade girl students, and Love actually was picked as a learning material. The students were grouped as advanced learners according to the test in school. The 10 clips were selected from the movie and 10 teaching plans were organized on the basis on them. The teaching plans were made by analyzing and comparing the considerable points such as the synopses, vocabularies, expressions, speaking points and cultural differences. Then, 3 clips were selected and adopted for the actual classroom use. The class consisted of Pre-watching Activity, While-watching Activity and Post-watching Activity. Instead of using the whole movie, parts of the movie that were thought essential were used in order to draw the learners' attentions. The movie clips last about 5 minutes on average. After completing the lessons, the survey on the effects of the lessons using the movie was conducted.
The results of the study are as follows: First, the movie in English class was found to have a positive influence on students' affective domains. The movie played a role of motivating the students to participate in learning activities. Second, the movie in English class was found to be efficient for improving students' listening and speaking confidence. The authenticity of the movie motivated them to enhance their communicative confidence, and integrated study also became an option by adopting the various classroom activities.
It is necessary for teachers to utilize movies to stimulate students' interest and maximize the effects of leaning. Also, creative movie-related materials should be developed to enhance the communication skills of learners. Furthermore, it is highly hoped that teachers will pay more attention to the use of movies in class and make efforts to develop useful teaching materials and activities.
