영화를 활용한 중학교 3학년 학년말 영어 수업 지도 방안

- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to suggest a lesson plan to teach English using movie clips for the 3rd grade students in middle school at the end of the year in order to improve their affective sides: interest, motivation, and self-confidence.
The subjects for this study were three classes of students in the 3rd grade of a middle school in Busan. The course of 15 class periods was conducted with movie clips and worksheets for one and a half months from November to December after the textbook course had finished. Also, before and after this course, researches were done through questionnaires about the experiences and thoughts of English teachers and students. Then the results were analyzed to find out the characteristics of the teachers and students and the effect of using movies in English class to improve students' affective sides.
The movie clips were from three movies: Twilight, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Coraline. They were shown with no subtitle first, then with Korean, and next with English subtitle. Each class was conducted in three stages: pre-viewing, viewing, and post-viewing. 30 kinds of activities were adopted, for example, word puzzle, guesswork, predicting, ordering pictures and sentences, intensive listening, completing sentences, script quiz, OX quiz, writing summary, movie remaking, etc.
The result of the questionnaire before the course showed that both teachers and students expected using movies would be helpful to English class. And it also appeared that students wanted to be good at English while they didn't have much interest and confidence in learning English. This means the class to improve affective sides was necessary to the students.
The questionnaire result after the course showed that there had not been a significant change in students' affective sides; not only interest, motivation, and self-confidence about English but also their interest and expectation about English class using movies. However, fewer students chose negative answers while the number of students who reacted in a positive way increased on the whole. It was confirmed that teaching English using movies can be an effective way to improve students' affective sides if it is studied further. Therefore it is suggested that teachers study using movies in English class to make better and more effective lesson plans.
