The Difference in Linguistic Ability and Spatial Ability between the Left-hand Dominant Young Children and Right-hand Dominant Young Children
Abstract
The purpose of this study lies in finding out the difference in linguistic, spatial abilities between left-hand dominant young children and right-hand dominant young children, and proposing objective data on the relation of the dominance of a hand and bias toward either side of hemisphere.
The questions this study put forth are as follows.
1) Is there difference in linguistic ability between the left-hand dominant young children and right-hand dominant young children?
2) Is there difference in spatial ability between the left-hand dominant and right-hand dominant young children?
19 left-hand dominant young children and 20 right-hand dominant young children aged 5 and attending the kindergarten and nursery in Busan metropolitan city were chosen through questionnaire for this study and K-WPPSI simple intelligence test was used to check up of homogeneity matter of the two groups. The linguistic ability test tool made by Jang Young Ae(1981) and revised, supplemented by Park Ae Ja(1996) was used to find out the young children's linguistic, spatial abilities test tool developed based on the configuration system of spatial ability categorized by Hong Hae Gyeong(2001) and Grander(1990)was used to measure the young children's spatial ability. Average points and standard deviation of linguistic ability and spatial ability were calculated for the collected data using SPSS WIN 15.0 statistic program, followed by independent t-test.
Following are the summarized study results.
First, the difference in average scores of linguistic ability between the-left hand dominant young children and right-hand dominant young children was insignificant in statistics. All the subarea consisting of linguistic ability(vocabulary, language comprehension, language expression) showed insignificant difference.
Second, the difference in average scores of spatial ability of left-hand dominant young children and right-hand dominant young children was insignificant in statistics. All the subarea consisting of spatial ability(eye motor coordination, figure-ground discrimination, spatial reasoning, visual memory & reflection location grasp through spatial perception) showed insignificant difference.
The results of the test showed that even the dominance of a hand may be determined in early childhood, it doesn't affect the bias toward either side of hemisphere. and that's why there was insignificant difference in linguistic ability and spatial ability. Besides, the significance of this study lies in its proposal of an objective grounds for the assertion that the expert division of the left and right hemisphere. is not fully done in early childhood, and it will be useful data for the linguistic and spatial abilities of left-hand dominant young children and right-hand dominant young children.
