- Abstract
- 『Sanshiro』 is a full-length novel which is collection of 117 articles, was published in Asahi newspaper since September 1st to December 29th in 1908. Right after this novel published, a pond place in Tokyo university which is first place that main character ‘Sanshiro’ and ‘Mineko’ met in, became ‘Sanshiro pond.’ As it shows, this novel has gained in popularity from it published and until now. Author Natsume Soseki well expressed a portrayal of woman in the age of western modern culture rapidly poured in Japan.
Most of exiting interpretations of 『Sanshiro』 are masculine notions, however, this paper will discuss different approach to consider the novel with Mineko as central figure. Focused on Mineko’s marriage as independent choice, this paper will study that the progress of her mind changes about how she marry other man than Sanshiro or Nonomiya.
Even Nonomiya pursues outstanding education, he is inconsiderable of Mineko and shows economic troubles. Due to his situation, he avoids his responsibility and thinks that marriage is impossible for him.
Sanshiro is a guy from the countryside to enter university. He doesn’t mind to marry than and he wants to devote himself solely to learning. He, though, is not brave enough to get close to Mineko.
is a capable man with a good knowledge. His positive attitude gains Mineko’s trust and finally she married him.
Mineko doesn’t frustrated that she wandered between Nonomiya and Sanshiro. Looking for a new start, she hews her way as an active woman. She changes her mind when she felt trust and love from who is with knowledge and competence.
Through 『Sanshiro』, Natsume Soseki depicted a portrayal of human mind about love through an woman, Mineko. She chose to be independent, not to be frustrated about what she experience, and it helps her to start new life.
In 『Sanshiro』, Mineko is a reflection of Meiji era. Author combined modern woman’s image with his own feminine form in his novel. Her changed attitude affects author’s literary world of pursuing the human mind and it continues to 『Sorekara』 and 『mon』.
