Fantasy문학을 통한 효과적인 영어 수업 방안

Abstract

본 연구는 영문학 텍스트가 영어교육에서 활용되는 것이 바람직하다는 이론적 근거와 특히 교과서 보다 더 학생들의 흥미를 느끼게 하여 학습동기를 유발할 수 있는 환타지 문학의 중등 영어교육을 위한 적합성을 살펴보았다. 연구의 제한점에서 언급되었듯이 적정한 교재를 선택할 때 학습자의 언어적 수준을 고려해 언어적으로 개념적으로 너무 어려운 작품은 피해야 하는데도 불구하고 「Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone」에는 중학생 3학년의 수준을 상회하는 어휘와 표현들이 상당 부분 있다. 하지만 이 텍스트를 선택한 것은 내용상 학습자가 쉽게 공감할 수 있는 대중성을 지니고 있으며 「Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone」은 판타지문학의 대표작으로서 학생들에게 널리 읽혀지므로 읽기 전 활동을 통해 이러한 배경지식을 더욱 활성화시켜 학습자들은 언어적 어려움을 극복하고 이야기를 읽어나갈 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 즉, 배경지식은 어려운 단어나 표현에 대한 이해를 도와 언어 습득을 용이하게 해 줄 것이다. 문학 텍스트는 총체적 언어교육(whole language approach)에 적당한 교재이다. 문학 텍스트의 장점은 언어의 4기능을 분리된 것이 아니라 통합된 전체로서 보는 교수법을 활성화 시킬 수 있다. 문학텍스트는 학습자의 흥미를 끌 수 있는 재미있는 이야기로 구성되어 있음으로 통합적 언어 교육의 목적을 달성할 수 있게 한다. 이것을 실천하기 위해 「Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone」자체를 활용해서 내용 이해를 위한 적극적인 읽기 교육과 더불어 받아쓰기를 통한 듣기, 원어민 영어교사와 학습자간의 질의응답을 통한 말하기, 의미 있는 글쓰기를 통합적으로 가르치는 학습 방법을 고안해 보았다. 본 연구를 통해 환타지 문학을 활용한 효과적인 영어 수업 방안에 대한 제언은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교사는 읽기에 있어 배경지식의 중요성을 인식하고 읽기 전 단계에서 학습자들이 이를 적극적으로 활성화시킬 수 있도록 하여 학습에 도움이 되도록 해야 할 것이다. 둘째, 획일적인 교재와 교수법을 적용하는 방식을 벗어나 학습자들의 적극적이고 창의적인 학습활동을 촉발시키는 문학텍스트를 활용하여 그 안에서 재미와 감동을 찾게 함으로써 흥미와 자신감을 심어 줄 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다. 셋째, 학습자들에게 참여 할 수 있는 기회를 많이 주어 학습자 중심의 활동적인 수업이 되도록 이끌어야 하며, 학교에 원어민 영어교사를 적극 활용하여 최대한 영어를 사용하도록 학습자들을 격려하여 의사소통 능력을 키워나갈 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다. 열성적인 교사, 문학텍스트 그리고 학생이 삼위일체가 되어 영어 교실에서 상호 협동적인 활동이 이루어진다면 문학을 통한 영어지도라는 학습 및 교수 목표도 곧 하나의 뚜렷한 목표로 자리잡게 될 것이다. 이러한 목표를 현실적으로 뿌리내리게 하기 위해서는 무엇보다도 현장 교사의 지도방안에 대한 노력이 필요하고 그리하여 변화하는 시대에 능동적이고 유연하게 대처할 수 있는 지성인을 키워 내는 것은 뜻 깊은 일이 될 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to present effective teaching models for English classes through fantasy literature. Fantasy Literature has become a favorite genre for students these days. It naturally arouses their learning motivation and interest. It also enables students to understand a foreign culture and to master language skills such as reading, listening, speaking and writing interactively. A selection of suitable texts for students is a prerequisite for the successful use of literature in the classroom, although it has been considered difficult to adopt as a learning material due to the characteristics of its vocabulary and sentence structure. In order to effectively use literature as a teaching material, we should seek out the pedagogical methods which will increase the ability of the four language skills. To develop language skills, it is important to select the right literary text. It would be appropriate to select a text that contains not only extensive cultural values, but also interesting content and themes for students. Among literary texts, 「Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone」 is one of the most attractive materials to select for its familiar theme and authentic vocabulary. I apply a three-stage reading instruction to 「Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone」 and have developed a syllabus for the practical use in an English class. It is suitable for the middle school 3rd grade syllabus and consists of 4 lessons. Every lesson has three stages; pre-reading, while -reading, and post-reading. Pre-reading activities are important in activating students' background knowledge and motivating them. With the help of their background knowledge, they can infer the meaning of the words within a context more easily and understand difficult words or expressions. While-reading activities are to dictate and check the words after listening audio recordings. Post-reading activities are to ask and answer the questions about the story with a native English teacher. If teachers plan more diverse activities for teaching literature in class, it will eliminate some of the cons of teaching literature in class. Above all, English teachers need to make every effort to provide the students with chances to take part in class and encourage them to express their opinions in English. Therefore, fantasy literature is needed and should be expanded to the discussion of how we should teach it.
