Abstract
Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dioxin-like biphenyls (DL-PCBs) are lipophilic organic compounds whose origincomes from many different sources. Although human exposure to PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs can occur by various routes, fish consumption is one of the primary sources of exposure.
The purpose of this study was to measure the levels of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs (DL-PCBs) in internal organs of codfish(Gadus macrocephalus). The codfish samples were collected from Geojae sea waters.
The concentration of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs ranged from 0.297 to 7.547 pgWHO-TEQ /g w.w 0.347 to 50.206 pgWHO-TEQ /g w.w respectively. The highest concentration of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs were residues in codfish livers, and the edible portions(flesh) should lower concentration level detected than the other internal organs. The congener distributions of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs in the organism groups were different; the dominant contributors of the total TEQ concentrations in all groups were 2,3,4,7,8-pentachlorinated dibenzofuran (PeCDF), and PCB 126. Futhermore, the bioconcentration factor and mass balance model were completed using fugacity. Bioconcentration factor (BCF) is the common evaluation parameter for the level of chemical compound accumulation in aquatic organisms. The PCDD/Fs log BCF was estimated as 3.157, and DL-PCBs log BCF was estimated as 6.893. The log BCF value had a linear relationships with octanol/water partition coefficient (Kow).
A fugacity-based model is used to determine the accumulation mass of codfish. The calculated fish concentration was 0.98 mol/, using survey data and reference data.
