아침자습시간을 활용한 영어교육방송시청이 중학생 영어능력 향상에 미치는 효과 연구

Abstract

본 연구를 통하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 아침 자습을 활용한 EBS 영어교육방송 시청이 학습자의 전반적인 영어 능력 특히 듣기와 읽기의 이해 기능에 약간의 긍정적인 효과를 보였다. 사전 검사 및 사후 검사로 실시한 결과 집단 내 평균은 5.74점 향상되어서 유의미한 변화를 보였다고 할 수 있겠다. 둘째, 2회의 영어듣기능력평가 결과로 살펴보고자 했던 아침 자습을 활용한 EBS 영어교육방송 시청이 학습자의 영어 듣기 능력에 주는 효과는 긍정적이지 않다. 비교 집단의 4월과 9월 영어듣기능력평가의 결과 비교에서도 보듯이 9월 시험의 난이도 더 낮았으며, 난이도가 낮은 시험인 경우 오히려 변별력이 떨어지기 때문으로 분석할 수 있다. 하지만 위와 같은 결과는 설문 조사 결과에 다르면 학생 내부의 요인으로는 연구 집단의 시청의 성실성이 부족하고, 시청에 대한 내적 동기 부여가 되지 않았기 때문이라 볼 수 있다. 외적인 요인으로는 교사의 지도 및 영어교육방송 시청에 대한 지도 부족, 화면의 질이 낮고 끊김 현상이 잦은 기술적 문제, 프로그램 자체의 난이도 조절 문제, 학생의 수업 부담 및 교사의 업무 부담 등이 원인이 될 수 있겠다. 셋째, 교사의 비교적 성실한 시청지도에도 불구하고 학생들의 효과성에 대한 부정적인 인식 때문에 EBS 영어교육방송 시청 참여도는 낮았으며, 교사도 체계적인 지도가 없이 아침 자습 시간을 이용해 학생들에게 교육방송을 시청하도록 하는 경우에는 실제 시청의 효과가 적을 것으로 여긴다. 넷째, 학생과 교사 모두 EBS 영어교육방송 시청의 장점으로 매일 짧게나마 영어에 노출될 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있고, 제대로 활용할 경우 얻어질 사교육비 경감 효과를 꼽았다. 다섯째, 학생은 교실 소란과 화질 불량, 화면 끊김을 EBS 영어교육방송 시청의 개선점으로 꼽았으며, 교사는 교실 소란과 사전 홍보 및 협의 부족을 개선해야 할 사항으로 언급했다. 이러한 연구 결과는 학교 교육 보완과 사교육 대체 수단으로 정부차원에서 각 급 학교에서 EBS 영어교육방송을 활용하도록 권장하고 있는 가운데 실제 학교 학생들의 영어능력 향상에 긍정적인 효과를 미치기 위해서 아직도 여러 가지 개선해야 할 사항이 있다는 점을 시사해 준다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of watching a TV English program to middle school learners' English proficiency and how it actually works in a school setting. This study was designed to discuss three research questions: First, can TV English programs help to improve students' English reading and listening abilities? Second, how did the students and teachers think about this type of activity? Lastly, how well did they participate in the programs? For the research methods, the results of the nation-wide achievement test and the English listening tests were used to determine the improvement of learners' proficiency. In addition, the questionnaire was administered to the 133 students of the 8th graders and 22 homeroom teachers who supervised these students including two English teachers. Major findings of the study are as follows: First, the pre-test and post-test results have shown that watching TV English programs helped to improve the 8th graders' English reading skills. Second, based on the comparison of the two English listening tests, the TV program didn't seem to affect the 8th graders' English listening ability in a positive way. Third, the negative attitudes of both the students and their teachers towards watching the EBS TV English program seemed to cause their low participation rate. Fourth, these two groups in the survey thought that this project would give them a chance to expose them in an English learning environment on a regular basis and help to reduce the cost they would spend in private English lessons, if performed properly. Finally, the students, in particular noted that noises in the classroom, unclear picture quality, and abrupt disconnections of video needed to be improved for a better participation while the teachers thought that noises in the classroom and lack of students' interests were the intervening factors for poor performance. They also mentioned that lack of publicity about this project, and prior consultations of this kind of project needed to be piloted before it actually was administered. Based on the findings above, the following suggestions are made: First, to get full cooperations from teachers, students, and parents, prior consultations and steps to get approvals from the participants would be needed before this kind of project using a TV English program. In addition, some kind of seminars and guidelines should be provided for teachers to guide the students. Second, practical models of using a TV English program should be developed and provided to schools. Third, various English programs should be listed for use in the classroom efficiently and teachers' guides need to be developed and distributed as well.
