한국전통문양을 활용한 디자인 교수·학습 방안 연구

Abstract

우리나라는 훌륭한 전통문화를 가지고 있음에도 불구하고 서구 문화의 범람으로, 고유한 전통의 우수성과 가치가 제대로 인식되지 못하고 있다. 현재 시행되고 있는 제 7차 교육과정의 미술교육에서도 전통미술에 대한 중요성은 언급하고 있으나 앞서 조사한 설문조사에서도 볼 수 있듯이 여러 가지 여건상 체계적인 수업이 이루어지지 않고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 연구자는 예로부터 이어져 온 우리 민족 문화의 소산으로서의 한국 전통문양을 중학교 미술과 디자인영역에 접목하여 조상들의 생활속에 깊이 스며있는 전통문양을 학생들에게 이해시키고 현대적 시각으로 재해석하여 생활 속에서 활용할 수 있는 실용성 위주의 디자인 수업방안을 연구하고 실행하였다. 이를 통하여 가치관이 형성되기 시작하는 중학생들이 우리문화에 대한 가치를 조금이나마 인식하고, 우리문화에 대한 자부심을 가질 수 있게 하였고, 또한 ‘전통문양을 활용한 생활용품 꾸미기’와 ‘전통문양을 담은 자석홀더 제작하기’ 수업을 통하여 우리의 전통미를 생활속에서 실현하고 응용할 수 있는 계기를 제공하였다. 또한 자신이 직접 만들어 본 자석홀더는 버려지는 재활용품을 활용하여 꾸밈으로 환경적인 측면을 생각하게 하였으며, 자신이 만든 작품에 대한 소중함과 전통문화를 애호하는 자세를 기르고자 하였다. 그 결과 학생들의 우리나라 전통미술에 대한 이해가 증진되었고, 자발적이고 흥미 있는 수업참여로 우리나라 전통문양과 생활용품 디자인에 대한 이해와 시각적 관심이 향상되었다. 또한 한국 전통문양의 상징성과 조형성에 대하여 바르게 인식되었으며, 이로 인해 우리 조상들의 사상과 생활양식을 느낄 수 있는 계기가 되어 우리 전통미술에 대한 자부심을 갖게 할 수 있었다. 오늘날 빠르게 발전하고 세계화, 국제화되어 가는 시대상황에서 ‘가장 한국적인 것이 가장 세계적인 것이다.’ 라는 말의 의미를 되새겨 볼 필요가 있다. 따라서 교육현장에서는 학생들에게 전통문화에 대한 올바른 인식을 심어주고, 우리문화에 대한 자긍심을 길러 주어야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 교과서 단원 속에서 자연스럽게 전통문화를 만날 수 있는 다양한 교수학습모형이 앞으로도 지속적으로 연구되어 현장에서 활용될 수 있도록 하여야 하며, 아울러 학생들이 전통문화와 접근할 수 있는 다양한 기회를 제공하고 체험하게 함으로써 전통과 현대를 잇는 교육이 지속적으로 이루어져야 할 것이다.

With the term "globalization" becoming a common thing in our daily life, we have somehow developed the perception that "globalization" is tantamount to "westernization." Note, however, that "globalization" actually means that the whole world enjoys high-level cultures through the sharing of the outstanding cultures of many other countries. Therefore, in keeping with the globalization age, we should search our indigenous cultures for outstanding ones that we can share with the whole world to let them know more. Although Korea retains excellent traditional cultures, we have not properly recognized their excellence and values. The importance of traditional art is cited in art education in the current 7th curriculum, yet art classes have not been systematically conducted in reality for several reasons such as lack of teaching and learning materials and class hours. Education is supposed to sow the seeds of right values for future generations, and the result varies depending on what kinds of seeds are sown. Accordingly, this study sought to help students understand the value and excellence of traditional Korean patterns -- the cultural outcome of Korean people symbolically expressing the way of life and emotions of the general public in each age from the ancient times -- through art and design classes in junior high school. Practical design classes were also examined and held by re-interpreting our traditional cultures from a modern viewpoint. This in turn aimed at enabling the students to acknowledge the values of our traditional cultures through this study as well as providing a basis for living as a Korean taking pride in our culture in the world. Moreover, through the teaching and learning processes, opportunities to realize and utilize the beauty of our traditions in life were provided. The following are the contents and methods of this research: First, through previous studies and references, the concepts, origins, types, and symbolic implications of traditional Korean patterns were investigated, and their educational values, finally examined. Second, the significance of traditional Korean patterns in the art subject of junior high school in the 7th curriculum was examined; traditional Korean pattern plates as shown in six types of art textbooks were mainly analyzed. Third, through a survey of 34 junior high school teachers and 184 students in Busan City before the traditional pattern classes on traditional Korean patterns were held, the recognition and education experiences of junior high school students with regard to traditional patterns were investigated. Fourth, based on the survey result, a class model for design learning wherein traditional Korean patterns were utilized was presented and applied in class. Fifth, through the results from the classes, an integrated analysis was performed, and the final results were identified. As a result, the understanding of junior high school students improved; their interest in class increased with their voluntary attitude, and their understanding and interest with regard to traditional patterns and design of living appliances also improved. Moreover, the classes became opportunities to perceive correctly the symbolic implications and visual forms of traditional Korean patterns; this in turn enabled them to take pride in traditional arts through a correct understanding of ideology as well as the way of life of our ancestors. In the age of globalization and internalization wherein every thing is rapidly changing, we should take to heart the phrase "the most Korean things are the most international ones" so that education facilities can make continuous efforts to inspire students to retain the correct values and perceptions regarding our traditional cultures. Toward this end, various teaching and learning models should be steadily studied to help students naturally experience our traditional cultures in their textbooks and to utilize them in the field. Specifically, education connecting traditions and modern times should be steadily carried out by offering students various opportunities to experience traditional cultures.
