Abstract

Kim, So Jin is considered as a writer who succeeded literatures of the 1980s creatively and opened a new horizon of literatures of the 1990s. His character describing is evaluated high by a lot of critics. This paper was written for the purpose of studying on how the character was described in his works through the social circumstances in from the 1960s to the 1970s and from the 1980s to the 1990s. Kim, So Jin described his character through the realism technique; that works as it is through the reflection of social circumstances and the reappearance. He shows the repugnance and the absurdity of society through the realism as a technique of literature and the description of real character in his novels. Fathers and mothers, the central characters in the family, were described as the characters who reflected the poor society at that time in So Jin's works which were based on writer's childhood experiences in the 1960s-1970s when the economic polarization appeared through the industrialization and the urbanization. In his novels, fathers and mothers are described as the symbolic characters which shows the negativity of society. Kim, So Jin shows the pure passion of intellectuals who was denied by the resistant ideology of the 1980s and the logic behind capital of the 1990s in his novels. In other words, he shows the frustration of 'intellectual-activist' who was excluded from society of the 1980s through describing the intellectuals in the present. In conclusion, through poors is frustrated by the industrialization, the anguish of intellectual is expressed as the poor reality, violence, dark future and pessimism in his novels. Like this, Kim, So Jin shows the various aspects of the character which was based on real experiences of himself through reflecting real society.
