Influence of Psychological Separation and Parental Attachment on School Adjustment Resilience of Middle School Students
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of psychological separation and parental attachment of school adjustment resilience of middle school students. In order to obtain this research purpose, the following research questions were established. First, what influence does psychological separation have on school adjustment resilience of middle school students? Second, what influence does parental attachment have on school adjustment resilience of middle school students? Third, What is the relative influence of psychological separation and parental attachment on school adjustment resilience of middle school students?
The subjects of this study were middle school students in Busan and data from 492(male, 243; female, 249) students were analyzed Subjects completed Psychological Separation Inventory(Kim, 2007), Parental Attachment Inventory(Ok, 1998) and School Adjustment Resilience Scale(Ryu, 2006). Collected data were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, product moment correlation coefficient and multiple regression(stepwise).
The major findings of this study were as follows:
First, psychological separation statistically significantly predicted school adjustment resilience of middle school students. Specifically, the influence of psychological separation from father was stronger for male than female, whereas, the influence of psychological separation from mother was stronger for female than male.
Second, parental attachment statistically significantly predicted school adjustment resilience of middle school students. Specifically, attachment to mother was more influential for school adjustment resilience than attachment to father for both male and female.
Third, the results of investigating the relative influence of psychological separation and parental attachment on school adjustment resilience of middle school students showed attachment to mother was the most influential for both male and female. Next influential variable was psychological separation from father for male and attachment to mother for female.
Based upon above results, it is important for middle school students to both separate psychologically from their parents and have a secure relationship with their parents in order to improve their ability to adjust to school. Finally, the implications of these results were discussed and future research questions were suggested with a comment on some limitations of this study.
