- Abstract
- This study suggests The Integrative Teaching Method of Novel texts Reading and Writing.
Although reading and writing are interactive language skills, they are educated as separated segments in a curriculum. But reading and writing are similar in requiring comprehensive and analytic thinking. So reading and writing is considered as separated segments, but we need to integrate them through practical activities.
With this necessity, this study researches the method of explanation writing as The Integrative Teaching Method of Novel texts Reading and Writing. The Integrative Teaching Method of Novel texts Reading and Writing is based in the point that the characters of skilled writers can be developed by Whole language education. The Integrative Teaching Method of Reading and Writing based on the steps of reading and writing of Squire with the ground that reading ability will be developed best in association with writing activities.
Based on the above theoretical background, the method of explanation writing teaching using the knowledge of the characters, events and background of novel text is suggested. Because the writing activity through the novel text reading is the goal of this study, integrative method is the writing activity of introduction and report using the questions of the phases (pre-reading, while-reading, post-reading) of novel text reading lesson.
And the example questions are made using the text, "Wonmi-dong people by Yang Gwi-ja" of third grade. The writing method using pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading phases is suggested. In this method, students can write introduction using they find about the novel and write report based on the structure of novel. The questions and answers of writing activity are suggested and the aims of teaching, the consideration, the evaluation criterion, teaching plan are suggested. It will be useful method because the novel texts in a curriculum are used and it is suitable for the system of the text.
The implications of this study are followings:
First, reading ability and writing ability can be developed best through practical activities.
Second, introduction and report writing after novel text reading, students can use the activated background knowledge and content knowledge in writing activities.
Third, it makes students pay attention to the content and understand the structure, the characters, the background and conflicts of the text for writing activities.
At last, The Integrative Teaching Method of Novel texts Reading and Writing activities are suitable for the system of textbooks and curriculum. And they are made as a activities of summary part of the textbook unit and the writing activities are based on the given examples of the textbooks. Therefore, this method can be used in the real class.
The Integrative Teaching Method of Novel texts Reading and Writing will contribute to enlarge the area of the writing teaching.
