A Study on the Appropriation and Repetition of the Painting Style of the Late Chosun Period Approached in the View of Visual Design
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine whether expressive styles of the painting of the late Chosun period are possible to be developed into expressions of modern visual design. The study is carried out in the following procedure.
First, this researcher investigates the characteristics, trends and expressive styles of the painting of the late Chosun period to identify the nature of traditional beauty that has been historically developed.
Second, paintings of the late Chosun period are analyzed in terms of appropriation and repetition. In addition, how they are meaningful in the history of art is examined. Furthermore, the value of the painting of the same period and its possible applications in terms of modern visual design are explored.
Third, secondary art education under the 7th National Curriculum of Education, in which traditional art is emphasized, is divided into several parts, especially in relation to design. Then, the researcher applies the principles of the painting of the late Chosun period, appropriation and repetition to those parts, exploring new possible expressions of visual design.
For the study, the researcher makes a literature survey to get some theoretical backgrounds of the painting of the late Chosun period and an analytic research on painted works of the same period. For the literature survey, the researcher investigates and analyzes previous studies about the painting of the late Chosun period.
In the analytic research, paintings to which the principles of appropriation and repetition were applied are analyzed in order to determine how they can be associated with modern visual design. In relation, the researcher applies the two principles actually to secondary art education classes.
Results of the study can be summarized as follows.
First, it was found that theoretically, expressions of the painting of the late Chosun period are possible to be developed into those of modern visual design.
Second, painted works of the same period were empirically analyzed to find that the above mentioned principles are appropriate for educating traditional art, which is emphasized under the 7th National Curriculum of Education, by means of visual design.
Third. the late Chosun period was when the proper art of Korean style was first formed. Appropriation and repetition used in the painting of the same period were found applicable in the field of visual design. Such applications of the twos might help people form their national identity and their own view of the state.
This study is meaningful in that it helps change middle school students' views of traditional art. In other words, the study shows that appropriation and repetition found in traditional art are possible to be expressed in compliance with this era of design, beyond the notion that traditional art is just one-sided and uniform.
