- Abstract
- The most popular folksongs Koreans sing is new folksongs nowadays. New folksongs, however, is evaluated negatively because some scholars insist it has Japanese ways, little spirit of resistance, and lacks popularity from mass of people. Therefore, this thesis is on the characteristics of new song, especially on its form and contents, and its meaning based on the history of popular culture. At first, this study starts from the definition of new folksongs; A wide sense of new folksongs is the one changed from the traditional folksongs by arrangement or changes of words, and a narrow sense of new folksongs is made lyricists and composers in 1930s. The previous studies has not limited the range of research so the results are different from each investigator. Hereupon, this study designated 89 objects categorized into a narrow sense according to 6 standards of classification.
The second chapter has formal characteristics of new folksongs. Distribution location of Yeoeum according to the location has lots of burden and it is for the emphasis on the subject by dividing melodies in accordance with meanings. While displacement of refrain has people remember the contents of songs and enhance appeal by repetition. The middle Yeoeum plays a role that makes pleasure or of emphasis, and The head Yeoeum had audience concentrate on the song, make singer keep composure by allowing singer to improve his/her voice.
As the result of classification of refrain based on the its existence, composition of refrain occupied 73.44%. Composition of refrain has meaning and meaninglessness together and this shows us Yeoeum of new folksongs is increasingly changing meaninglessness Yeoeum into meaning Yeoeum. In addition, most of Yeoeum were borrowed from traditional folksongs, which informs us of its succession of traditional folksongs.
A syllable rhythm of new folksongs is mainly 3?4 tune and 4?4 tuner, 7?5 tune follows 3 meter, 3?4 tune와 4?4 tune meter rhythm of 4 meter. In those days, however, 7?5 tune is considered as traditional form of poetry do the number of letters are tied up intemtionally. This kind of phenomenon had influenced on the practice that keep the strict number of letters, especially, traditional form of poetry, 3?4 tune and 4?4 tune.
In chapter Ⅲ, features of new folksongs on its contents are dealt with and they are classified into ‘a song of parting and love’, ‘negative the spirit of the times’, ‘a song of sigh', ‘welcome a fruitful’, In ‘a song of parting and love’, the reason of separation is not clear but the speaker is sad the desperate reason. In ‘a love song’ is about the pleasure of love and playing with love. In ‘negative the spirit of the times’ is mainly about spring that is hopeful, lively and means desire of independence. ‘love of a country’ shows pride on our nation and attachment to our nature. ‘a denial actuality criticism' has sorrow and trials of colonists and spirit of resistance under Japanese' oppressive censorship. ‘a satire the trend of public opinion’ represents aspects of people who suffered from the erosion of traditional values and nihilism.
‘a song of sigh’ is deductive song which advises the youth to enjoy their life, while ‘sigh of one's personal affairs’ is on deploring of their life.
‘welcome a fruitful’ reflects the desire that people want to enjoy a year of abundance in spite of the dark period.
We can recognize that new folksongs connects traditional folksongs and poetry literature before modern period and had played a role that speaks for people's sorrow and makes them calm down under Japanese forcing their culture.
This thesis is wanting in ability to represent all of new folksongs because it is subjected to a narrow sense and lacks in the consideration for lyricists and composers, so consistent researches should be performed in the future.
