- Abstract
- In general, the concrete is well recognized as highly durable material.
But, when it is exposed to various physical and chemical environments, the continuous deterioration is made in it, reducing the service life of the structure.
The corrosion of reinforcing steel by the chloride ions that penetrate into the concrete is one of the primary factors which cause the deterioration of concrete structure.
The corrosion of reinforcing steel not only reduces the load carrying capacity of the structure due to the sectional loss of steel itself but also causes the cracks and the pop-outs in the concrete through the expansion of reinforcing steel, degrading the performance of structure seriously.
Recently, the construction of civil engineering structures that are directly exposed to the chloride environment-e.g. bridges and land reclamation facilities in the marine environment-is increasing. Thus, the corrosion problem of reinforcing steel by the chloride attack has become more serious. But, as the chloride diffusion is influenced by diverse factors, it is very difficult to analyze it correctly. Moreover, for the durability design against the chloride attack, the chloride ion penetration analysis that considers the chloride diffusion in a reasonable way is required. Now there have been suggested many design methods taking the concentration change of chloride ion into consideration. But due to the fluctuation of the diverse influential factors, there always have been the uncertainties in their interpretation and design.
Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of chloride diffusion and penetration, the durability design method against the chloride attack and the specifications on the chloride attack in Korea and foreign countries were documentarily researched on this basis, and the properties of each were considered to establish the basic data for the durability design method appropriate for the Korean situation.
