- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to discuss the core meanings of the preposition ‘on’ and to analyze how the various meanings of ‘on’ are cognitively related. In traditional and structural grammar, ‘on’ has been treated as a function word which has no meaning in itself. According to Langacker's theory of Cognitive Grammar, language is closely related to cognitive ability. It shows how the meaning network of the preposition ‘on’ is inferred and established from its prototype meaning. The process is explained through relationships between the trajector and the landmark.
This thesis focuses on analyzing the different meanings of the preposition ‘on’. In Chapter 3, the basic meanings of ‘on’ are analyzed and then in Chapter 4, expanded meanings are analyzed. This thesis shows various meanings of the cognitive figures between the trajector and the landmark. The meaning of the preposition ‘on’ is extended to ‘temporal contact’, ‘simultaneity’, ‘continuation’, ‘repetition’, ‘participation’, ‘support’, ‘influence’, ‘cause, basis’, and ‘membership’.
