- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to test the effect of the appearance awareness program on female middle school students' school life adjustment and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance. This research is based on the following hypotheses.
First, there would be a difference in school life adjustment between the experimental group that participates in the appearance awareness program and the control group.
Second, there would be a difference in sociocultural attitudes towards appearance between the experimental group that participates in the appearance awareness program and the control group.
The subjects of this study were 38 students in the first grade of B middle school in Haeundae-gu, Busan. They were divided into two groups, the experimental group and the control group, with 19 students each. The experimental group took the program composed of 11 session, each of which was 60 minutes, twice a week after school(three times a week during vacation). The control group did not take any treatment during the period.
Appearance Complex Scale developed by Gim Chu seong(2001), School Life Adjustment Test developed by Yoo yoon hee(1994), and the Test of Sociocultural Attitudes towards Appearance developed by Park kyung mi(2006) were used to measure the school life adjustment and sociocultural attitudes towards appearance.
The program used for this study was developed by the researcher who referred to the programs of Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs(2004). The results of this study were analyzed by t-test using SPSSWIN 12.0 program.
The major findings of this study were as follows:
First, the experimental group that participated in the appearance awareness program showed more positive school life adjustment than the control group.
Second, the experimental group that participated in the appearance awareness program showed more positive sociocultural attitudes towards appearance than the control group.
Based on the above findings, it is concluded that the appearance awareness program has positive effects on the school life adjustment and the sociocultural attitudes towards appearance of female middle school students.
