A STUDY ON ANIMACY AND STUDENTS' COLLOCATIONAL COMPETENCE
Abstract
Many researchers have found that animacy is systematically encoded in languages different ways. Also, some studies show that the Korean structure encodes the difference in animacy while the English structure does not encode the difference. The difference in coding mechanism is systematically found in various linguistic levels such as morphology, lexicon, and syntax and also in various parts of speech such as noun, pronoun, adjective and verb.
Based on these theoretical backgrounds, this thesis investigated how different animacy coding mechanisms in English and Korean languages affect Korean middle school students' collocational competence which is one of the most important competences for language learners. The subjects were a total of 95 middle school students and the participants completed the questionnaire that consists of 80 questions related to animacy of adjectival predicates and verbs. The questionnaire aimed to see how well the middle school students understand the different coding systems of animacy between two languages in various contexts so that they can properly collocate the words.
The result shows that Korean middle school students do not clearly understand the different animacy coding mechanism between two languages and that their English collocational competence is meaningfully affected by the difference.
