중학교 영어 교과서 내의 문화 내용 비교 분석

Abstract

오늘날 세계는 사회변화가 가속화되고 학술, 문화, 산업 모든 분야에 있어 국제간의 교류가 긴밀해짐에 따라서 이미 지구촌이라는 하나의 공동체로 결속되고 있다. 이러한 물결 속에서 영어는 국제어 혹은 세계어로서 통용되는 상당히 중요한 위치를 차지하는 필수언어로 쓰이고 있다. 이로 인해 실용어로서의 영어교육의 필요성이 우리나라에서도 대두되고 있으며 외국어 교육의 진정한 목적인 원활한 의사소통 능력을 향상시키기 위한 교육이 실시되고 있다. 이러한 관점에서 영어권 문화를 적절히 다루는 영어교과서들이 절실히 필요하며, 그러한 교과서들을 통해 학습자들이 바른 문화적 이해와 넓은 세계적 안목을 기를 수 있도록 해야 할 것이다. 본 논문은 문화 내용이 중학교 1, 2, 3학년 교과서에 어떻게 제시되고 있으며 또한 얼마나 포함되어 있는가를 연구하고자 한다. 이전 선행 연구에서 실시하였던 교과서의 문화 분석에 그치는 것이 아니라 문화 내용의 학년별 추이를 문화 소재별, 국가적 배경별로 분석하여 교과서를 통한 문화 교육의 정도를 알아보고, 그 중요성을 재확인하여 학생들이 보다 자연스럽고 흥미롭게 타 문화를 접하여 영어 학습에 동기 부여를 할 수 있도록 돕고자 한다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the cultural contents in the middle school English textbooks in Korea. Understanding of the target culture has become one of the major factors of language learning, especially since the term 'culture' was newly added to the language elements of the 7th National Curriculum Revision. The current study analyzed the cultural contents in all grades of the eight different textbooks out of the fifteen middle school English textbooks used in Korea. The results of the analyses are as follows: First, according to the analysis of the cultural materials of the 7th National Curriculum Revision, most middle school English textbooks strive to cover various cultural materials, but a couple of them only suggest a few of materials. The scope and depth of the materials found to be increased as the level of the grades goes up. Second, aside from the universal cultural aspects, the textbooks seem to place too much emphasis on Korean culture and British/American cultures so the cultures of other English-speaking countries and non English-speaking countries seem to be ignored. Lastly, the comparison of Korean and British/American cultures seems to promote students' understanding of the differences between those cultures easily. However, the proportion seemed to be unbalanced. In conclusion, almost all textbook is found out to deal with a variety of cultural materials and background information, but it is true that each textbook does not have enough quantity and quality of cultural contents. In the era of globalization, it is crucial to recognize these cultural differences and understand them for successful communication. As a result, we need to make sure that learners are exposed to a variety of cultural contexts and have a chance to understand them correctly in the classroom. Yet in reality, such opportunities are not provided easily. So textbooks must include various and interesting cultural contents. This enables students to develop their communicative ability as well as understand the target culture better.
