초등 영어 학습자의 영어 성취도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구에서는 영어를 배우는 초등학생 학습자들의 영어 학습에 관한 배경, 영어 학습 전략, 영어 학습 신념을 조사, 요인 분석 하였다. 또, 각 요인들의 상관관계를 살펴보고, 성취도와의 상관관계 분석과 회귀분석을 통해 성취도와 요인들이 가지는 상관관계 정도와 성취도에 대한 설명력 있는 요인들을 찾아보았다. 첫 번째 연구문제였던 ‘초등학생들은 영어 및 영어 공부와 관련하여 어떤 배경과 신념, 그리고 전략을 가지고 있는가?’에 대해서는 본문에서 그림과 표로 정리하였다. 또한 영어 학습에 대한 신념과 전략 사용은 3단계로 구분하여 초등학생이 비교적 많이 가지는 신념과 전략, 학습자에 따라 다른 신념과 전략, 비교적 적은 신념과 전략으로 구분하여 제시하였다. 둘째, ‘영어와 관련된 배경, 학습 신념, 학습 전략은 서로 어떤 상관관계를 가지는가?’에 대해서는 배경, 학습 신념, 학습 전략을 요인 분석해 각각의 요인들이 가지는 관계를 상관 계수로 나타내고 어떤 것들이 상관관계가 있는 조합인지를 표로 정리하였다. 그리고 마지막 연구 문제였던 ‘셋째, 영어와 관련된 배경, 학습 신념, 학습 전략의 요인들은 영어 성취도에 어떤 영향을 주는가?’에 대해선 성취도와 상관분석과 회귀분석을 하였다. 결과 유의한 상관관계를 보인 요인은 노출기회요인(r=.37, p<.05), 공부시간(r=.33, p<.05), 인지전략(r=.30, p<.05), 정서요인(r=.27, p<.05), 영어에 대한 적성과 영어의 중요성에 대한 신념(r=.23, p<.05), 영어에 대한 기대와 태도에 관한 신념(r=.19, p<.05), 생활화전략(r=.17, p<.05)순이었다. 또한 회귀분석 결과 설명력이 상대적으로 높았던 요인은 인지전략(β=.38, p=.000), 노출기회(β=.26, p=.001), 공부시간(β=.17, p=.037)순이었으며, 보완전략(β=-.17, p=.023)과 사회/정의적전략(β=-.24, p=.008)은 오히려 음의 설명력을 가진 것으로 드러났으며, 이렇게 도출 된 회귀식은 영어 성취도를 24.2% 설명해 주고 있었다.

The purpose of this thesis is to find the relationship between affect, exposure, beliefs and strategy use in young learners' English language achievement. For this purpose, 166 Korean 5^(th) grade primary school students were tested using both the listening and the reading and writing sample tests of the YLE (Young Learners’ English test) of Cambridge University. In addition, they were also asked to answer to a series of questionnaires concerning their backgrounds, their beliefs, and their strategies as these applied to their learning of English. Factor analysis was performed on each questionnaire and three factors were extracted from background questionnaire, four factors from the beliefs questionnaire, and five from the strategy questionnaire. In addition, correlation analysis was performed on these extracted factors, while both correlation analysis and regression analysis were performed on English achievement and these factors. In order of significance, the exposure factor (∫=.37), current studying time (∫=.33), cognitive strategy use factor (∫=.30), and others (the affect factor, beliefs about aptitude and importance of English, beliefs about expectations and attitude to English, and the practice strategy factor) were found to be correlated with the Young Learners' English achievement scores. In addition, regression analysis revealed that, in order of cognitive strategy use, the exposure factor and current studying time explained English achievement positively, while social & affective strategy use and compensation strategy use explained English achievement negatively. This model could explain 24% of Young Learners' English achievement.
