- Abstract
- We, humans, are living in a so called information-oriented society. Not only few professionals but all members of the society collect, arrange, and use the information to perform their work. As we are living in this society which requires information, we quickly and accurately need to choose and use the right information.
Elementary education, the very grounding level of school, is a primary educational process to learn minimum qualities needed for people's basic life. As Elementary school takes the biggest part in basis education, it especially requires to teach information literacy and self-leading learning ability to adjust to information-oriented society. Thus, changes in recognition that school library can perform a pivotal role on information education in elementary school, and extension of facilities and studies on facilities are required.
This study understands that the library's function and role to satisfy changes in society has extended, selected 34 elementary schools in Busan which established and operates libraries in their school and grasped the present condition of the library, and got a result as below by analyzing legal and plot planning standard conformity.
First, in a result of studying on lighting, by 64.7%, 22 schools' library windows faced south, south-east, or south-west. Studying on distance with cause of noise, it showed 14 schools, 41.2%, were 41m or more distanced from the cause of noise. By synthetically investigatedon lighting and cause of noise, it showed lots of elementary schools show a good result on lighting and cause of noise problems, however, nearly 50% of libraries still faces the need of improvement.
Second, in a result of studying the arrangement of the library, it showed 29.4%, 20 schools, had one-sided library. Also, in a study of the closeness between classrooms and libraries, it showed 17 schools, 50%, were close to classrooms. By examining these results with community openness and in connection with computer related facilities, it requires the improvement in most of the Busan elementary school libraries on selecting a right location of the library and encouraging the pleasant environment for the student in using.
Third, by examining the size of the library, it showed that libraries of 15 schools, 47.1%, met only 50 to 74% of the minimum size standard, averaging 44.6%, and resulted that the extension of a scale of libraries in most of the schools are urgent.
Fourth, the legal standard of elementary school libraries are insufficient, and as a standard of the Korean Library Association and a paper is not compulsive, immediate preparation of systematical legal standard is required.
Elementary school in information-oriented society should operate as a center of a grounding to educate students to perform as a member of the society. Thus, it is necessary to expand the school library facilities to meet facility standard that has been suggested and the study on rational facility standard should go on.
