Effect of Typhoons on Time and Spatial Distribution of Freshwater Region by River Runoff in a Small Bay
Abstract
With the passage of a typhoon time and spatial variations of freshwater region by river runoff in a small bay was examined using a three-dimensional primitive equation model (POM). Numerical experiments were focused on how to fluctuate freshwater region by the tracks of typhoons and their intensities on freshwater region. Three-track cases of typhoons were performed in the estuary of the western Nakdong River as the model area. The model results showed that the variation of freshwater region depended on the track of typhoon. In other word, a clockwise eddy were formed in the bay in lefthand side typhoon and kept freshwater discharging into the bay from extending. In the case of righthand side typhoon, the intension of this eddy was poorer than that in the case of lefthand side, so freshwater region was larger than that. However, a centered-track typhoon did not form such a clockwise eddy in the bay, but it shows a complicate result because it is different than that wind direction before and after the passage of typhoon. And freshwater in the vertical shows typical form in estuaries.
