Harry Potter series에 나타나는 영미어 비교 분석

Abstract

영국 영어로 쓰여진 Harry Potter series가 미국으로 건너가면서 미국 영어로 어휘와 구문이 수정되었는데, 영국 출판물과 미국 출판물에 나타나는 어휘 사용의 차이를 13개 항목으로 비교, 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 우선, 영국 출판물과 비교하여 미국 출판물에서 가장 큰 차이를 보이는 항목이 서로 다른 어휘를 사용하는 경우이다. 이는 비교 대상 전체 409개의 어휘 중에서 83개로 20.3%의 비율을 보이고 있다. 양 국에서 각 소설의 출판년도가 같음을 볼 때 두 나라의 어휘 차이는 17세기 초, 영국 이주민들이 새로운 생활환경에서 보지도, 경험할 수도 없었던 특이한 풍물을 접하면서 이들의 언어생활에 커다란 변화가 일어나게 되었으며 새로운 지리적인 환경과 특이한 물건들을 적절히 표현하기 위해 낱말을 새로이 만들고, 이미 있었던 낱말의 뜻을 수정하고 생활 약식에 알맞은 어구를 고안해 낼 필요성을 느꼈던 것이 지금까지 두 나라의 어휘 사용에 영향을 미친 것으로 볼 수 있다. 두 번째로 큰 차이를 보이는 항목이 어휘(구문) 첨가로 영국 출판물과 비교할 때 미국 출판물에서 전치사나 부사 또는 구문이 더해진 것을 일컬으며 13.7%의 비율을 보이고 있다. 세 번째로 높은 비율을 보이는 항목은 철자 및 어휘의 축소로 45개의 어휘, 11.0%이다. 이는 Webster의 영향으로 철자와 발음이 간소화 되었으며 실질적이고 간결한 것을 좋아하는 미국인의 성격이 반영되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 이 연구의 분석 결과 가장 적은 비율을 보이고 있는 것이 get의 과거 분사형인 gotten으로 전체 409개의 어휘 중 4개로 1.0%를 차지한다. 영국영어에서 이미 사라진 gotten을 미국인들이 아직 사용하고 있긴 하지만 미국 영어에서도 got과 gotten의 혼용으로 그 비중은 그리 크지 않은 것으로 생각된다. Harry Potter series에서 비록 소수에 불과한 어법들을 비교하여 빈도수 조사에서 나타난 결론을 일반화하기에 무리가 있는 것이 사실이지만, 이 연구에서 두 나라간 어법상의 차이가 있음을 알 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate and become aware of the differences in British and American vocabularies. When the Harry Potter series, originally written in British English, were published in America, they had to change the certain vocabularies. So I compared the vocabularies in the two publications, < Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince> and < Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix>, based on 13 specifications. The findings of this study are as follows: First, the biggest difference between the American and British publications is word usage. In this study, I found that 83 words out of 409 word samples (20.3%) are different. The differences in vocabulary between British and American English date back to the early 17th century. English settlers used the different vocabularies after arriving in the New World because they were adapting to a new environment. The final difference is that the American publication uses gotten, a past participle of get. While American English still uses past participle of get, gotten disappeared from the British English. This change should not affect communication between the British and the Americans.
