- Abstract
- This study was carried out to examine the effectiveness of internet-based methods of elementary school English teaching in a after-school program. Firstly, major internet sites were selected on the basis of their suitability of curriculum and instruction models for elementary English education. Secondly, 51 elementary after-school English program participants were surveyed after they were subjected to internet based English instruction for 1 hour each day over 3 days. The student's interests, reactions, and concentration were analyzed from the survey.
The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, most students through the first to third grade showed higher interest in using the internet for English education, then fourth to sixth grade. Secondly, using the internet as a self study method of English at home was shown to be unuseful without the proper aid of teachers. Thirdly, most of the students showed high interest in using the internet in their after school English program. Fourthly, the desirable results were obtained despite student's frequent use of the internet at home. Lastly, students showed different responses according to their school years. First and second graders preferred the English stories and songs, while fifth to sixth graders showed little interest in English stories and songs. Third and fourth graders responded positively to various kinds of program offered on the internet. Interestingly, all students showed high preference to game-based methods of English instruction.
Based on the result of this study, the following suggestions are given: The teachers should guide their students in order to search and select suitable items from the numerous internet sites. Secondly, students have high interest in using internet-based educational resources. Therefore we need to develop novel educational methods using the internet. Lastly, to achieve the goal of effective elementary English education, more teachers need to be trained in the use of of internet-based teaching methods.
