Abstract
This research examined the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows, carbon emissions, and renewable energy consumption based on industry level in China for 1997-2018 using the ARDL model. It intends to explore the effect of FDI on carbon emissions and the relationship between FDI and renewable energy consumption in different industries. The research did an empirical analysis, including the primary industry, the secondary industry, and the tertiary industry. Furthermore, the research analyzed the sub-industries, such as industry, transport, residential and commercial and public services. Therefore, the research applied the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test for the unit root. After identifying that all variables are integrated into I (0) or I (1), the research used the ARDL model to prove the relationship between FDI, carbon emissions, and renewable energy consumption for the long run and the short run. Furtherly, the Toda Yamamoto causality test identified the causal relationship between variables. The research results showed that the increase of FDI caused the increase of carbon emission in the secondary industry, industry, transport, commercial and public services. In addition, with the increase of FDI, renewable energy consumption will increase in the primary industry, the secondary industry, industry, and transport. Nevertheless, with the increase of FDI, renewable energy consumption will decrease in the tertiary and residential industries.
