전문계 고등학생들의 영어 어휘학습책략 사용연구

Abstract

본 연구에서 전문계 고등학생들의 영어 어휘학습책략에 관한 조사 분석한 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 전문계 고등학교 영어학습자가 전반적으로 가장 많이 사용하는 의미발견책략은 영한사전을 이용한 방법(74.1%)이었으며 그 다음으로 단어 목록 찾아보기(66.3%), 학급친구에게 단어의 의미를 물어보는 방법(64.5%) 순으로 많이 사용하며, 그리고 기억강화책략의 경우 전문계 고등학교 학생들은 발음 익히기(77.4%), 철자 익히기(76.8%), 우리말로 풀이해보기(76..8%) 순으로 많이 사용하며, 사용하는 책략과 유용하다고 인식하는 책략에는 부적 상관관계를 보였다. 둘째, 어휘학습책략 사용에 대한 고등학교 1학년과 2학년 학년 간의 차이를 분석한 연구에서 먼저 의미발견책략 중 가장 많이 사용하는 책략 다섯 가지가 동일했으며, 유의미한 차이를 보이는 책략 중에서 결정책략인 ‘단어의 접두사, 접미사, 어근 분석하기’, ‘단어목록 찾아보기’는 2학년이 더 많이 사용하였으며, 그리고 나머지 사회적 책략인 ‘담당교사나 학급친구들에게 물어보는 방법’은 1학년이 더 많이 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 여기서도 사용과 유용성 인식 정도가 부적 상관관계를 보이면서, 결정책략을 상대적으로 덜 사용하는 1학년 학생들은 결정책략이 어휘를 학습하는데 있어서 유용할 것이라 인식하는 정도가 높음으로써 유의미한 차이를 보였으며, 사회적 책략을 덜 사용하는 2학년 학생들이 사회적 책략이 어휘 학습하는데 있어서 도움이 될 것이라 인식하는 정도가 높음으로써 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 그리고 기억강화책략 역시 1학년 학생들과 2학년 학생들이 가장 많이 사용하는 책략 다섯 가지가 동일하였으나, 2학년 학생들은 ‘발음 익히기’, ‘반복해서 써보면서 학습하기’와 같은 책략을 가장 많이 사용하는 것으로 나타났으며, 1학년 학생들은 ‘단어의 의미를 우리말로 풀이하기’, ‘철자를 익히기’와 같은 책략을 가장 많이 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 기억책략인 ‘단어의 동의어, 반의어를 함께 학습하기’, ‘단어의 발음 익히기’ 이 두 가지 책략은 2학년이 더 많이 사용하며 그리고 나머지 ‘그림카드를 작성하여 학습하기’ 인지책략과 ‘모르는 단어를 무시하기’와 같은 상위인지책략은 1학년이 더 많이 사용함으로써 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 마지막으로 학업성취도에 따른 의미발견책략을 살펴보면 상위그룹의 학생들과 하위그룹의 학생들 모두 ‘영한사전 찾기’, ‘단어목록 찾아보기’, ‘담당교사나 학급친구에게 물어보기’ 순으로 가장 많이 사용하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 그리고 유의미한 차이를 보인 책략은 담당교사에게 단어의 의미를 물어보는 것이었다. 그리고 기억강화책략의 사용에서는 상위그룹과 하위그룹의 학생들 모두 ‘영어단어 철자 익히기’, ‘발음 익히기’, ‘우리말로 풀이하기’, ‘반복해서 써보면서 학습하기’ 책략을 많이 사용하는 것으로 조사되었다. 유의미한 차이를 보이는 책략 모두 상위그룹의 학생들이 하위그룹 학생들보다 상대적으로 많이 사용하는 것을 알 수 있으며, 기억강화책략 중에서 상위그룹은 ‘그림 단어카드 사용하기’, ‘접사와 어근 분석하기’ 책략이 가장 유용할 것으로 생각하는 반면 하위그룹 학생들은 ‘영어를 모국어로 사용하는 원어민과 의사소통하기’, ‘물건에 영어 이름표를 붙여 단어 학습하기’가 가장 유용할 것이라 인식했다. 그리고 ‘철자 익히기’, ‘핵심단어 중심으로 영어단어를 학습하기’, ‘말로 반복하며 학습하기’ 세 개 책략 모두 하위그룹의 학생들이 상위그룹의 학생들보다 더 유용할 것이라 인식하는 정도가 높음으로써 유의미한 차이를 보이는 것으로 결과가 나타났다. 이상의 연구 결과를 살펴보면, 전문계 고등학생들이 어휘를 학습할 때 사용하고 유용할 것이라고 생각하는 책략들에 대한 조사에서 어휘학습책략 사용과 유용할 것이라고 인식하는 정도가 학년과 학업성취도에 따라 다르다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 학년 간, 학업성취도에 따른 상·하위그룹 간 사용하는 책략과 유용할 것이라고 생각하는 책략 간의 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 사용하는 책략과 유용할 것이라고 인식하는 책략 사이에 부적 상관관계를 보였다.

In foreign language learning, acquisition of vocabulary is very basic and important. Nevertheless, Korean English teachers have given little attention to their vocabulary teaching and to students' vocabulary learning. Moreover, most of the students who learn English as a foreign language have difficulty because they don't have enough exposure to English. For this reason, they should study a lot of vocabulary by themselves. Therefore, it is necessary to call teachers' attention to the importance of the vocabulary teaching. The teaching of vocabulary is especially important for vocational high school students because the level of their English ability is relatively lower than that of general high school students. The purpose of this study is to investigate the strategies that vocational high school students usually use and think are useful. For the sake of achieving the goal of this study, the following research questions were examined: 1) What are the strategies that vocational high school students use and think helpful? 2) Are there any differences between the strategies that Grade one and two students use and find helpful? 3) Are there any differences between the strategies that high and low grade groups use and find helpful? The results of this study are as follows. First, when students are facing a new word, many students use ‘Use bilingual dictionary’, ‘Use word lists’, ‘Ask classmates or friends for a sentence containing the word’ strategies to discover the word's meaning. Students use ‘Study the sound of a word’, ‘Study the spelling of a word’, and ‘Paraphrase a word's meaning’ to consolidate the word's meaning. Second, Grade two students use more strategies to discover and to consolidate the word's meaning than Grade one students, but Grade one students more firmly believe that the strategies are helpful for learning vocabulary than Grade two students do. Grade one students, in particular use the Social Strategies more than Grade two students, while Grade two students use the Determination Strategies more than Grade one students. Lastly, the high grade group of students uses the strategies a little more than the low grade group of students. From this study's findings, we can conclude that most of the students don't use various vocabulary strategies and that they usually use some limited repetition strategies such as studying the spelling or the sound of the words. Although it is important to teach the meaning of the vocabulary, Korean English teachers should introduce various vocabulary strategies and help the students use the strategies so that they can study the vocabulary effectively by themselves.
