초등필수 영어단어의 차용어 어원분석

Abstract

지금까지 문헌연구 자료들과 함께 Illustrated Oxford English Dictionary와 인터넷 어원사전 (http://etymonline.com) 을 기반으로 영어 차용어의 많은 부분을 차지하고 있는 프랑스어, 스칸디나비아어, 라틴어, 그리스어를 중심으로 교육청에서 제시하는 초등필수 영어 800단어를 기준으로 그 어원을 분석하고 차용된 나라별 빈도수를 기초로 한 분석 결과는 아래와 같다. 첫 번째로 영어 토착어(native words)가 고대영어, 중세영어, 그리고 현대영어를 포함하여 481개로 60%를 차지했다. 두 번째로 라틴어가 164개로 20.5%를 차지했다. 세 번째로 프랑스어가 52개로 6.5%를 차지했다. 네 번째 고대 스칸디나비아어가 26개로 3.3%를 차지했다. 다섯 번째 그리스어가 24개로 3%를 차지했다. 여섯 번째 이탈리아어가 10개로 1.3%를 차지했다. 마지막으로 독일어, 아라비아어, 페르시아어, 산스크리트어, 벨기에어, 기니어, 피진영어, 중국어, 네덜란드어, 체코어, 프로방스어, 멕시코어, 스페인어, 그리고 플랑드르어 또는 독일어순으로 각각 0.8%∼0.1%를 차지했다. 따라서 초등필수 영어 800단어의 어원은 대부분이 영어 토착어임을 알 수 있었다. 그것은 일상생활에 관한 기본어는 자국어라는 사실을 그대로 반영했다. 이것은 영어 토착어가 일상생활어의 60%인 반 이상을 차지하고 있음을 보여주는 것이다. 그리고 20개정도의 다른 어원들도 존재하였는데 그 나머지 40%가 차용어임을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 일상생활어에 있어 차용이 많이 된 언어별 순서는 라틴어, 프랑스어, 스칸디나비아어, 그리스어 등의 순이었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 영어가 세계어로서 발전해 가는 과정을 살펴볼 때, 주변의 어휘를 상당히 받아들이되 주체성을 잃지 않는 것을 알 수 있었다. 결과적으로 영어 일상생활어휘 어원은 영어 자국어가 60%를 차지함으로써 일상생활에 관한 기본어는 자국어라는 사실을 알 수 있었다.

This study is to examine loan-word etymology of essential elementary English words. The purpose of this study is to find out the sources and origins of English loan words. In this study I have discussed the various ways in which English was affected by languages such as French, Scandinavian, Latin and Greek. This study has focused on many English loan words and will assist Koreans in understanding the sources and origins of English loan words. For the main part of this study, I have selected 800 essential elementary English words and analyzed how many of them originate from these foreign languages, using http://etymonline.com and the Illustrated Oxford Dictionary. The results were as follows: First 60% of the total 800 words are composed of English native words and thus leaving the remaining 40% being composed of loan-words. Which consisted of, Latin making up 20.5%, French 6.5%, Scandinavian 3.3%, Greek 3%, Italian 1.3% and others making up about 0.8% to 0.1%. English has not only borrowed many words from foreign languages, but has also absorbed many foreign elements with their own characters into English. This explains why English has such an abundance of words from different origins and why it is so expressive, thus obtaining the status of the 'international language'. This study is expected to be helpful for English learners to understand the many sources of English loan-words.
