호주 영어의 특징에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문에서는 일반적인 호주 영어의 특징과 영국 영어와 비교되는 특징을 고찰해 보았다. 호주는 영국의 침략에 의해 식민지로 전락하게 되었고 침략자의 언어인 영어가 토착어의 자리를 빼앗아 약 200년 동안 호주대륙에서 사용되면서 점점 더 그 위세가 강화되어 오늘날 호주전역에서 압도적으로 사용되는 우세한 언어가 되었다. 호주의 몇 가지 특징적인 상황들은 호주 영어의 발달과 변화에 큰 영향을 끼쳤는데 첫째는 지리적인 고립, 둘째는 범죄자 식민지로서의 사회적 근원, 셋째는 현재 호주를 ‘melting pot'이라고 불리게 만든 비영어권 화자들의 엄청난 이민 추세가 그것이다. 이러한 배경을 토대로 성립, 발달된 호주 영어는 영국 영어와 구별되는 특징적 차이를 나타내고 있는데 그 차이점을 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 첫째는 구조적인 특징이다. 호주 영어는 영국 영어와 그 구조적인 맥락을 공유하고 있으나 조동사의 사용, 소유격 및 비교급의 표현방법과 동사의 단·복수 전환에서 약간의 차이를 보이고 있다. 두 번째는 발음에서의 특징이다. 특히 모음의 측면에서 봤을 때 호주 영어는 단모음의 경우 영국 영어에 비해 혀의 높이가 조금 높고 전설 쪽에서 조음되는 폐쇄성을 띄고 있으며, 이중모음은 단모음화되어 발음되는 특징을 가지고 있다. 세 번째는 어형적인 특징이다. 호주 어휘는 본래 사용되던 토착어 외에도 영국, 미국으로부터 유입된 표현들 그리고 자생속어들로 생성, 발달되었다. 이러한 호주 영어 어휘가 가지는 독특한 특징 중 하나는 바로 abo, Aussie와 같은 축소형 어휘가 많다는 점과 BYO, RS와 같은 두자어(acronym), Al Capone, Bob Hope와 같은 압운속어(rhyme slang) 형태의 사용이 많이 나타난다는 것이다. 오늘날 국제화 시대에 발맞추어 많은 사람들이 관광, 이민, 교육적인 목적 등으로 호주로 가고 있고 따라서 다분히 미국, 영국 영어에만 치우쳐졌던 편중현상이 이제는 호주라는 독특한 문화와 언어에도 할당되어야 할 때이다. 한 나라를 이해하기 위해서는 그 나라의 문화를 이해해야 하며 그 나라의 문화는 그 나라의 언어를 통해서 경험할 수 있는 것이다. 이러한 관점에서 볼 때 본 논문에서 다뤘던 호주 영어의 특징에 관한 연구들이, 글로벌 시대에 다양한 목적으로 호주로의 이동이 증대되는 상황에서 그 특유의 사회·문화적 배경을 가진 호주인들과 효과적인 의사소통을 하는데 도움이 되었으면 하는 바람과 함께 앞으로의 호주 영어 학습 및 세계어로서의 영어를 이해하는데도 도움이 되었으면 한다.

English takes an exclusive position as an official language in this globalized world, and is the first communicating method in every quarter. Currently, English is spoken in about 73 countries worldwide and each of them is used in different forms, since its development in different countries was affected by local, cultural, and linguistic characters. However in Korean case, all most every kinds of English study are under the influence of American English. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to promote general understanding of it through comparing Australian English, which is a kind of variant of English but not familiar with us, with British English that is the historical origin. The historical background which Australia was a colony of Great Britain tells us an interesting truth that Australian English was most significantly affected by British English. As American culture flew into Australia with various ways in 20 century, it also gave great influence on language life, but still Australian English has a lot in common with British English which is a matrix of it. Geographical isolation of Australian continent and contact with various dialects spoken by settlers became primary reasons for Australian English to be developed in its unique form, different from British English. And the unique characters are found in structure, pronunciation and lexis. Especially vowel characters, such as implosive vowels with less opened mouth than RP, and lexical characters, such as several diminutive or rhymed slangs, are suggesting that we should recognize and accept Australian English as one of the variants of English.
