다큐멘터리 영상표현에 관한 연구

Abstract

텔레비전 영상물은 일반적으로 제작자의 의도를 담아 제작되어지며, 영상은 제작자의 의도를 시청자에게 자연스럽게 이해시키기 위한 도구로 사용되어진다. 카메라를 통하여 생산되는 영상의 의미는 그 영상을 표현하는 주체의 관점이나 처리방법에 의해 좌우되며 영상제작자가 원하는 메시지를 수용자들에게 효과적으로 전달하기 위해서는 일정한 영상 언어적 표현이 필요하다. 본 연구는 어떻게 영상이 지닌 잠재적으로 무한한 다의성을 제한하고 선호된 하나의 의미를 찾을 수 있을지에 대한 문제의식을 가지고 출발하였으며 메시지 전달을 목적으로 하는 프로그램 속에서 영상이 어떠한 기능을 수행 하는지를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 문헌조사와 텍스트를 통한 영상분석을 하였다. 텍스트는 영상표현에 있어 인위적 연출을 자제하고 그 표현의 ‘진실성’으로 인해 타 장르에 비해 영상의 표현방법이 가장 순수하다고 판단되는 다큐멘터리 장르의 작품을 선택하였으며, 특히 영상을 가장 잘 이해하고 있는 촬영감독에 의해 기획되고 촬영, 편집된 MBC HD 특집 다큐멘터리 ‘송이-가을을 캐는 사람들’을 분석의 대상으로 선정하였다. 이 작품은 영상표현이 선명하고 탁월한 영상미가 중심이 되며, 그에 따른 영상이미지의 효과가 뛰어나다고 판단되었다. 위 텍스트를 분석하여 영상의 의미와 기능을 알아보기 위한 연구문제로 1. 다큐멘터리 영상은 어떠한 표현 양식을 보이는가? 2. 다큐멘터리 ‘송이’에서 특징적으로 보여 지는 영상의 표현방법은 무엇인가? 3. 다큐멘터리 ‘송이’의 영상은 어떠한 의미를 전달하는가? 세 가지를 선정하였다. 첫 번째 연구문제는 영상이 의미를 전달함에 있어 영상의 구성요소인 색, 구도, 움직임을 중심으로 그 의미를 구체화 시키고 있음을 확인하였고, 두 번째 연구문제는 다큐멘터리 ‘송이’의 영상이 의미를 표현하기 위하여 사용한 영상의 구성요소들을 요소별로 찾아 분석하였다. 세 번째 연구문제는 개별적인 영상들이 프로그램 속에서 가지는 의미와 기능을 텍스트 분석을 통하여 알아보았고, 여러 가지 의미를 담고 있는 영상을 어떻게 하나의 의미로 해석할 수 있는지를 밝혔다. 다큐멘터리 ‘송이’는 자막이나 내레이션을 통한 의미의 전달보다 영상을 통한 의미의 전달력이 돋보였으며 색, 구도, 움직임을 활용한 영상 언어적 표현이 탁월하였다. 모든 영상에서 이 세 가지 요소가 동시에 사용된 것은 아니지만 각각의 요소가 개별적으로 사용된 경우에도 영상의 의미를 전달하기 위한 도구로서 충분한 기능을 하였다. 또한 내용분석을 통하여 영상이 가지는 ‘언어로서의 기능’을 살펴보았는데, 다의적으로 해석이 가능한 개별적인 영상들은 내용분석과 연계하여 해석 하였을 때 하나의 의미로 해석이 가능함을 알 수 있었다. 이는 단순히 정보만을 담고 있는 개별 영상들이 어떻게 연결되어 통합된 이미지를 만들어 낼 수 있는지, 가장 기본적인 의미 단위인 샷들이 어떻게 연결되어 전체 이야기를 만들어내고 있는지를 보여준다. 프로그램 속에서 보여 지는 영상은 우연히 거기에 있는 것이 아니라 제작자의 의도에 의해 특별히 선택되어진 것이다. 이 영상이 어떻게 해석되어지는지를 파악하는 일은 프로그램을 제작하는 제작자에게나 프로그램을 시청하는 시청자에게나 모두 중요한 작업이 아닐 수 없다. 프로그램 제작자들은 자신이 만든 영상물이 시청자들에게 어떻게 해석되어 질 것인가를 미리 알 수 있음으로써 자신이 전달하고자 하는 메시지를 효과적으로 표현해 낼 수 있는 방법을 찾아낼 수 있을 것이며, 시청자들은 무차별적으로 쏟아지는 정보의 홍수 속에서 영상이 제공하는 왜곡된 이미지를 차단하고 제작자의 의도를 파악해 냄으로써 올바른 정보를 습득할 수 있게 될 것이다. 영상의 의미전달은 너무나 자연스럽게 이루어지고 TV매체는 우리에게 너무나 친숙한 도구이기 때문에 TV영상을 분석하는 일은 그렇게 쉽지 않다. 그러나 HDTV의 등장으로 앞으로 TV매체가 우리에게 미치는 영향력은 더욱 커질 것이고 따라서 TV영상을 분석하는 일은 더욱 중요해 질 수밖에 없다. 본 연구자는 현장에서 직접 다큐멘터리를 제작해본 경험자로서 본 연구논문을 통하여 영상의 의미전달 방법과 영상의 기능을 분석해 봄으로써 향후 프로그램을 제작하는 영상제작자들이 자신의 메시지를 효과적으로 표현할 수 있는 준거의 틀을 마련해 보고자 하였다.

A TV program is produced with the producer's intention in general, and naturally the pictures of the program become a tool to make viewers understand the producer's intention. The meaning of pictures that gets produced through cameras depends on the point of view of the subject showing the images or the processing method, and certain imagery linguistic expression is necessary to deliver the intentional message to the viewers efficiently. This study is going to start with a critical mind to figure out how to get the pre-intentional meaning out of the unlimited equivocalness on pictures, and the goal is showing what kind of function the pictures execute in a program that has a message to deliver on purpose. To get the goal achieved, this study analyzed images by inquiring references and texts. I selected a documentary program since text restraints artificial presentation in imagery expression and the 'truthfulness' of the expression goes with a simple and innocent way of making images compared to other genres. Specifically 'Song-i mushroom - People who pick fall,' MBC HD special documentary, that has been planned, filmed and edited by one of the most skilled directors got chosen for the analysis. This documentary has been inferred to show high imagery effect with the clear imagery expression and distinguished beauty of images. To find out the meaning and function of pictures by analyzing the text, I decided to focus on three subjects on the study. First, what kind of expression form does the pictures on a documentary show? Second, what is the characteristic method of expression of the pictures on the documentary 'Song-i mushroom - People who pick fall'? Third, what kind of meaning does the pictures in the documentary 'Song-i mushroom - People who pick Fall' deliver, and what function does it perform? The first subject shows that an image takes concrete shape on the meanings by focusing on the colors, composition and movement as the essential elements. The second subject answered by analyzing the composited elements that got used to express the meaning with the pictures of the documentary. The third subject shows how equivocal pictures can be interpreted to one meaning, and figures out the meanings and functions individual images in the program by performing text-analysis. The documentary 'Song-i mushroom - People who pick Fall' brings out power of communication of meaning through pictures than through narration or subtitles, and the imagery linguistic expression with colors, composition and movement is outstanding. Not all the images on the documentary uses the three elements simultaneously, but each element works just enough as a tool separately to convey the meaning of the picture. Besides, the pictures can be interpreted to have one meaning out of each equivocal image by analyzing the content for linguistic function. That infers how the basic shots as a meaningful unit get connected to make a whole story, and how each image containing simple information gets connected to show a united image. Not a picture in a program exists where it is by accident, but it is in the specific spot being chosen by the producer's intention. Needless to say, it is significant work understanding how the picture gets translated to both producers of the program and viewers who watch it. The producer will find out the most effective way showing the message to deliver by acknowledging how the pictures would be translated by the viewers, and the viewers pick up the right information figuring out the producer's intention, and blocking distorted images that the picture is offering in the indiscriminate stream of information. Analyzing pictures on TV might have been thought to be uneasy work until now since communication of a picture's meaning has been naturally attained and media like TV is such familiar equipment to people in this culture. As the appearance of HDTV in the media industry will bring huge effects on us in the future, it becomes far more important to analyze pictures on TV. As an experienced producer working on a documentary on the spot, the researcher on this study tried to set up a form that could go with to express a producer's intended message effectively by analyzing functions of pictures and communicating method of a picture's meaning for the future picture-producers from now on.
