- Abstract
- When considering the shipping industry in our country, in order to maintain a competitive power, concerned government authorities implemented regulations for the employment of foreign manpower and the international ship registration law. By relieving these employment restrictions there has been an increase in the employment of foreign seafarers.
Currently, there is not only a lack of manpower in the shipping industry but there is also a shortage of skilled seafarers. As a result there is high demand for qualified seafarers in every shipping company.
I studied the effect of job satisfaction in the areas of job duties, loyalty to the organization and the desire to work for another organization. There are various different factors which may be obstructing the employment of qualified foreign seafarers, such as cultural differences, social differences, different living environments, and space limitations on-board shipping vessels.
This study was done using the method of regression analysis to verify the effect that these factors have on the satisfaction of job duties, loyalty to the organization and the desire to work for another organization. Some characteristics of the work environment of seafarers include the attitude to adapt to cultural differences, social differences, different living environments, and space limitations.
To sum up the results of the analysis, first, if the seafarers had a positive attitude towards adapting to a different culture and to a different living environment it led to satisfaction of job duties.
Second, if the seafarers had a positive attitude towards adapting to a different culture and a different living environment it also led to loyalty to the organization. When the foreign seafarers were socially ostracized, it led to a lack of loyalty to the organization.
Finally, when the foreign seafarers were socially ostracized it resulted in the seafarer’s desire to work for another organization. Other factors included spacelimitations or unfavorable work environment conditions that led to the desire to change their occupation.
In view of the results of this research, in order to promote the satisfaction of job duties, loyalty to the organization and reduction of the desire to work for another organization, it is required to relieve the stress from these factors. To accomplish this, Korean Ship Captains and senior crew members must be understanding of the foreign seafarer’s cultural and social differences and educate them about Korean Cultural and Social practices.
