중학생의 인터넷 및 휴대폰 사용과 자기통제력, 학업성취도와의 관계

Abstract

청소년에게 인터넷과 휴대폰은 매우 매력적인 기기로 유용하게 사용되는 반면, 중독적 사용 등으로 인한 부정적인 문제가 발생하고 있다. 청소년의 인터넷과 휴대폰 중독적 사용에 대한 심각성은 청소년의 인터넷과 휴대폰 과다사용에 대한 연구조사나 매스컴을 통해 계속해서 보고되고 있으며 이에 대한 적절한 대안이 필요하다. 본 연구는 최근 청소년들에게 심각한 문제로 대두되고 있는 인터넷 및 휴대폰 과다사용의 정도를 알아보고, 인터넷 및 휴대폰의 과다사용과 자기 통제력, 학업성취도간에는 어떠한 관계가 있는지 알아보고자 하는데 목적이 있으며, 이에 위해 부산광역시 소재의 남·여 중학생을 대상으로 인터넷 및 휴대폰 과다사용 검사, 자기 통제력 검사를 시행하였으며, 학생들의 학교 성적을 통계처리에 사용하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중학생들의 인터넷 및 휴대폰의 사용정도는 그다지 심한 중독 성향을 보이지 않았으며, 선행연구와 마찬가지로 인터넷은 남학생이, 휴대폰은 여학생이 더 많이 사용하는 것으로 나타났다. 학년별로는 인터넷과 휴대폰 모두 1,3학년에 비해 2학년이 사용경향이 높게 나타났다. 둘째, 남 ·여 모두 인터넷을 많이 사용하는 학생일수록 휴대폰 사용경향이 높게 나타났으며, 인터넷과 휴대폰의 사용경향이 높은 학생일수록 자기 통제력이 낮았다. 반면, 인터넷의 사용경향과 학업성취도와는 여학생은 아무런 상관이 없었지만 남학생은 부적 상관관계를 보였으나, 휴대폰의 사용경향과 학업성취도와는 남학생은 아무런 상관이 없었지만 여학생은 부적 상관관계를 나타냈다. 자기 통제력과 학업성취도의 관계에서는 남·여 모두 자기 통제력이 강할수록 학업성적이 높았다. 셋째, 학년별로도 인터넷과 휴대폰 사용경향은 유의하게 정적인 상관관계를 보여주었으며, 인터넷 사용경향이 높을수록 자기 통제력은 1, 2학년이 낮게 나왔고, 학업성취도는 3학년만 영향을 받았다. 반면 휴대폰 사용경향에 대해서는 1, 2, 3학년 모두 자기 통제력이 낮았으며, 학업성취도는 2학년만 영향을 받았다. 자기 통제력과 학업성취도의 관계에서는 학년에 관계없이 자기 통제력이 강할수록 학업성적이 높게 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해 인터넷 및 휴대폰과 자기통제력, 학업성취도간의 관계의 성별과 학년별로의 차이를 알 수 있었으며, 청소년의 인터넷 및 휴대폰의 사용 정도가 자기 통제력과 학업성취도에 큰 영향력을 미친다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 청소년에게 있어 인터넷 및 휴대폰이 어떤 의미를 가지는지 공감할 수 있었으며, 이들을 과도하게 사용하는 청소년을 좀 더 이해하는데 도움이 되었다. 이에 가정이나 학교현장에서 인터넷과 휴대폰의 사용 자체를 무조건 규제하기 보다는 청소년들이 올바른 사용을 통해 성숙한 시민의식을 배양할 수 있도록 적극적인 방안을 모색해야 할 것이다.

While Internet and cellular phones are very attractive to adolescents, they cause a lot of problems because of adolescent's addiction to Internet and cellular phones. As adolescent's addictive internet and cellular phone use is continuously reported through research or media, we have to find solutions for this problem. The purpose of this study is to investigate utilization and addiction of internet and cellular phone causing serious problems to youth lately, and to examine the relations among overuse of internet and cellular phone, self-control and academic achievement with middle school students. For this purpose, male and female students from two middle schools located in Busan were asked to join a test for abuse of internet and cellular phone, sense of self-control. In addition, their academic achievements were used for statistical data processing. The results of this study could be summarized as below. First, it has been found that middle school students did not tend to be so seriously addicted to the Internet and cellular phones. Meanwhile, as found in the precedent studies, it has been noted that the Internet was used more by male students and cellular phones by female students. In terms of grade, it has been shown that the 2nd-grade middle school students had a higher tendency to use both of them than the 1st- and 3rd-grade counterparts. Second, it has been shown that the more male and female students used the Internet, the higher they tended to use the cellular phones. In addition, the higher they had a tendency to use them, the lower they had self-control. Meanwhile, in terms of the tendency of Internet use and academic achievement, there were no correlations among female students, but there was a negative correlation in male counterparts. Besides, in terms of the tendency of using cellular phones and academic achievement, there were no correlations among male students, but there was a negative correlation in female counterparts. With regards to self-control and academic achievement, it has been demonstrated that the stronger male and female students had self-control, the higher they had academic achievement. Third, it has been demonstrated that the tendency of using the Internet and cellular phones in each grade had significantly static correlation and the higher they tended to use the Internet, the lower they had self-control among the 1st- and 2nd-grade middle school students, while only the 3rd-grade middle school students were influenced in academic achievement. On the other hand, speaking of the tendency of using cellular phones, all of the 1st-, 2nd- and 3rd-grade middle school students had low self-control. Meanwhile, only the 2nd-grade students were influenced in terms of academic achievement. Regarding the relation between self-control and academic achievement, it has been noted that the stronger self-control they had, the higher they had academic achievement regardless of their grade. Through this study, the differences in the relation between Internet and cellular phone use, self-control and academic achievement by gender and grade could be obtained and it has been noted that the degree of their using Internet and cellular phones had a great impact on their self-control and academic achievement. Furthermore, the researcher of this study could feel sympathy for how meaningful the Internet and cellular phones could be to adolescents. In addition, it was helpful to better understand the adolescents who overused them. In this regard, it would be necessary to find out active methods of letting the adolescents cultivate their mature civility through their proper use rather than to blindly regulate their use of them at home or schools.
