Abstract

This study analyzes 128 sentences with the inanimate subject in the intransitive construction selected from ‘Please Look After Mother’(Korean-English version) to see how the inanimate subject in the intransitive construction is translated into English according to the conditions on animacy, linguistic typology(Ikegami 1991), stativity, and topic continuity. These influenced the translation of inanimate subject and also change of its construction. Among the 128 sentences with the inanimate subject in the intransitive construction, 33.6% were changed to the transitive construction, whereas 66.4% were in the same construction. In the transitive construction translated, 20.9% of inanimate subject were kept because of their agentivity as a similar agent like body or feelings but 79.1% of inanimate subject were changed to human, locative, and to nature under the influence of topic continuity or agentivity. In the intransitive construction, 84.7% of inanimate subject, which tell about action or situation of subject and describe its background information, were kept while 15.3% of subject were changed to human, locative, and part of body similar to the above. The characters of subject in Korean text were arranged in the following order: things, body or feelings, and nature. In the case of subject of things, they were usually kept when they tell the action or state of subject or describe a background information. But in some portion of sentences, they were changed to locative, and to human subject while similar agent like body or feelings, and nature were usually kept as subject but there were several exceptions that were changed to human subject. The result of the study may help in Korean-English translation of inanimate subject intransitive construction, which is frequently used in Korean text and hopes to contribute to future researchers by adding to more practical structure in addition to studies accomplished by various point of view in the future.
