영화 Monsters University를 활용한 통합적 영어지도방안에 관한 연구
- Alternative Title
- A Study on the Integrated English Teaching Method using the Movie Monsters University
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to suggest a lesson plan for the 2nd grade students in middle school to learn four competences in English language: listening, speaking, reading and writing by using the movie Monsters University.
Using movies in the classroom environment is said to have various advantages. First, it evokes great interest and motivation to learn for students who find the Grammar Translation Method unchallenging. Second, it enhances listening skills through the natural redundancy in the use of language. Third, movies are an authentic material, not designed for only learning purposes, so that dialogue spoken in the movie provide rich examples of real English languages ranging from vocabulary, expressions, and idioms to native speakers’ pronunciation. Fourth, it boosts cultural understanding usually not taught in the Korean classroom. Fifth, it enhances understanding of non-verbal communication such as reading gestures and facial expressions. Techniques regarding teaching English with movies used in designing a lesson plan are cited from Allan, Bouman, Williams, Kerridge, and Stempleski & Tomalin. Learners are encouraged to work together to carry out interactive tasks during the class.
Using movies in the classroom and the whole language approach is closely connected. The philosophy of whole language is complex and draws from education, linguistics, psychology, sociology, and anthropology such as Comenius, Dewey, Piaget, Vygotsky, and Goodman. The whole language approach focuses on learning from the general to the specific, or from the whole to the part. It is a grassroots movement insisting the integrated curriculum, student-oriented education, and focusing on meaning. In the EFL/ESL environment under the whole language approach, the main objective is to teach 4 competences in an integrated way.
The researcher hopes that the suggested lesson plans can help other teachers to design their own lesson plans and use active techniques to teach the four competences in English language.
