- Abstract
- The act of coating steel products with paint has been well documented and studied through long periods of time and has proven to be the most effective method to maintain the integrity of steel. Although coating of steel sounds simple in theory, the practice follows sophisticated and rigorous systems which depend highly on the environment of the steel.
For instance, a re-coating procedure in high level paint system is performed on offshore steel structures to combat harsh environmental factors that catalyze steel corrosion (i.e. salt and weathering). This paper discusses the effectiveness of sandpapering during a re-coating procedure in high level paint system.
The author has taken 3 sections of steel cross-sections (Side, Side-bottom, and Bottom) and divided each into two groups: Sandpapered coated steel and Non-sandpapered coated steel. It has then conducted Salt Spray Test and Immersion Test on all steel cross-sections for 16 weeks. Every week, an EIS resistance measurement was observed at 0.01Hz for steel corrosion, and Pull-off Test was carried out to measure adhesiveness of the coating.
Results of this experiment indicate that there are no correlations between hard papering and anti-corrosion and adhesiveness of a protective coating after a re-coating procedure in high level paint system.
