Analysis of the unusual α-shaped movement of the 14th Typhoon Tembin in 2012
Abstract
The unusual α-shaped movement of Typhoon Tembin (2012, 14th) at Northwest sea of Taiwan is analyzed through the high-order Laplacian filter, numerical simulation and deep-layer-mean steering flow. The high-order Laplacian filter is used to analyze filtered basic flow field to show how the basic flow makes alpha shaped path. The impact of TC initialization and sensitivity to analysis data on numerical simulation are presented when two typhoons are coexist closely. The deep-layer-mean steering flow vector is compared with Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) best track data to show the effect of basic wind field intuitively. Though 2012 typhoon report of Koea Meteorological Administration (KMA) informed that Fujiwhara effect between typhoon Tembin and Bolaven (2012, 15th) is the main reason of the unusual α-shaped movement of typhoon Tembin, this study shows that the wind associated with monsoon trough in basic flow which moved northward with Typhoon Bolaven is the key component of alpha shaped track of Typhoon Tembin. However, the idealized numerical simulation indicates that when typhoon Tembin moves unusually by the wind of monsoon trough, the Fujiwhara effect helps to change the movement rapidly. Such an analysis will help to produce better prediction of binary interaction of typhoons.
