Abstract
The automotive industry’s efforts to further reduce car accidents, along with meeting consumer demand and government legislation, are driving adoption of advanced automotive safety systems. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), radar and camera systems have become essential systems in the advanced safety vehicles. To satisfy these trends, automotive radar systems using integrated 24GHz and 77GHz radar sensor techniques are addressed for improved driver safety.
The emerging automotive radar systems have been developed over the past years to create more secure and more comfortable driving environment. Recent quite a few standards have been established for different applications. The adaptive cruise control (ACC) system basically detects the distance and the relative speed of the vehicles in front so as to perform a real-time response by means of the braking system or other protective mechanism. Today car companies and suppliers such as Robert BOSCH, TWR, DELCO, SIEMENS, AUTOLIV, HYUNDAI motors, etc. are already working on the development of the next generation radars and optimized algorithms.
This thesis proposes the design of optimized vehicle collision avoidance and low power algorithms using 24GHz/77GHz radar sensor. The algorithms include ACC and pre-crash algorithms based on low power consumption. These algorithms are designed to expand ACC to stop-and-go operation, to perform pre-crash warning, to act as parking aid, or to warn during backing up or changing lanes. The proposed algorithm showed lowest collision rate of less than 5% and power saving of 250% as compared to conventional results.
