Comparison of High School English Textbooks and EBS Reading Materials Based on Topic and Text Type

Abstract

This study examined how well high school English 1, English 2, and EBS English coursebooks reflected 2007 Revised National Curriculum, in terms of topic and text type. The method used is to compare and analyze 188 reading texts from English 1 and English 2, and 501 texts from EBS coursebooks published in 2014. The results of this study are as follows:
First, the results show that, high school English 1 and English 2 are evenly applied as recommended by the 7th National Curriculum of English Education, while EBS course books are too concentrated on some subjects. Second, according to the result of studying text types, this study has found that EBS textbooks are far heavier weighted in some areas than high school English 1 and 2. These results suggest that large differences exist between English high school 1 and 2 and EBS reading materials. Therefore, as is logically expected students who have consistently studied with high school English 1 and 2 will be unfamiliar and over-challenged by EBS coursebooks.
