Abstract
A study on the printability of lithographic ink according to
petroleum resin contents


Rosin-modified phenolic resins are widely used in printing ink even though they has shortcomings such as unfavourable solubility and interfacial tension. If these shortcomings can be remedied, better quality inks can be produced. In order to overcome the shortcomings, rosin-modified phenolic resins which have a high molecular weight can be mixed with low molecular weight petroleum resins. However, little attention has been devoted to this subject. This study explores the effects of different ratios of petroleum resin to rosin-modified phenolic resin on rheology properties. Five different ratios of petroleum resin to rosin-modified phenolic resin were used in the formulation of offset inks. The results showed that viscosity, tack and yield value decreased. as the ratio of petroleum resin rose, but print through, misting, abrasion resistance and setting time increased. On the other hand, the concentration value stayed same. These results suggested that proper mixing rosin-modified phenolic resins with hydrocarbon resin can result in good quality inks.
