- Abstract
- Rosin-modified phenolic resins have been used in all types of ink vehicle system and there are many grades commercially available. They have limited solubility in aliphatic distillate which makes them ideal for use in quick-setting varnishs and gels. Generally they impart tough and glossy finishes with good chemical resistance. They are compatible with alkyds and other resins to produce high gloss inks with good rub resistance.
Thus, in this paper, the effects of different ratios of alkyd resin to rosin-modified phenolic resin on rheology properties was explored. Five different ratios of alkyd resin to rosin-modified phenolic resin were used in the formulation of lithographic inks.
The results showed that tack, viscosity, yield value decreased. but misting, setting time increased. As the ratio of alkyd resin rose, gloss and density increased, but decreased when it exceeds a certain rate. These results suggested that proper mixing rosin-modified phenolic resins with alkyd resins can result in good quality inks.
